Piknic Electronik… What a blast!
written by Nancy Snipper
The atmosphere down at Parc Jean Drapeau was upbeat and fun. Totally open to all ages, this musical event now in its tenth year has already attracted over 10,000 people hear the each DJs unique ‘mix & match’ sounds. I bumped into Michel Quintal, the key founder of Piknic Electronik who told me why he wanted to start this unique event.
“You know, electronic music for the longest time was associated with drugs and clubs that didn’t open until late at night,” In other words, electronic music had a bad rap. “Let’s show how this music can be fun.” Michel wanted to feature a series of DJ artists in easy casual showcase mode whose sounds would bring all kinds of people together in a fun, easy way. “I wanted the music event to place in the early afternoon, not after hours. This music can be so much fun. Everyone dances and is smiling.” It‘s collective joy, for sure. The atmosphere is positive and people are pretty approachable to talk to.  Everyone seems to be in a good mood.
Michel starts the programming end of things in February, so that and his team bring that electronic groove into a vibes that echo all across the waters of the Saint Laurent River that ripple behind the DJ’s platforms.
This year, Michel listened to 600 submissions, and ended up selecting 60. He also snagged 40 DJs whom he more or less invited to come and spin... His taste is superb, judging by the exciting mix of sounds.
Pierre Babin from Montreal offered a unique mix of vinyl and CD blends. I even heard him spinning ‘Talk Talk’ (a 90s group) into the melodic fray. His buddy Alfred Borden who was not spinning that day but standing at the front enjoying Pierre’s skill and spinning choices told me Pierre is a DJ who brings us new disco and slow mo house. Alfred was dancing to the music, and so was I. I loved this guy’s opening spins which made me think of Buddha Bar and Café del Mar with edgier beats.
I enjoyed the robust sounds of J.A.S.S., also from Montreal. Wow! True ghetto stuff that flows into jazz with keyboard, horns, sax and percussion. This guy is sophisticated, giving us a voice that often repeated the word ‘ghetto’ as it merged with deep rugged sonic rhythms he was spinning on two vinyls.

Michel was thrilled that the weather had held up throughout each event, but as the wind kicked up, I decided it was time to go home and replay in my head all those luscious electronic blends that impacted my body and soul in such a positive way. I may have been cold, but I felt warm on the inside.

A.k.a. for Antoine Husson; active on the scene since the late 90s. Would have loved to have stayed but my body said no.

Few French electronic music artists combine experience, avant-gardism and guaranteed success on dance floors as Electric Rescue does. Quickly noticed by references as Laurent Garnier, Electric Rescue has released records on labels such as Cocoon, Boys Noize, and others. DJ Kobal (Canada)
Pseudonym for Jerome Decis; specialises in rare funk records. Has been spinning for 14 years and is a ‘house’ hold name in Montreal. His stage presence was lacking and his performance choices were not very eclectic. He seemed to provide more of a background than an actual part of the show.
