The Guilt Trip / Les Chemins de la Culpabilité by / par Anne Fletcher

Andrew Brewster (Seth Rogan), a Los Angeles based organic chemist, is preparing to go on a cross-country trip to try and sell his latest invention, an all-natural and safe cleaning fluid, called Scioclean, that is made from the oils found in coconut, palm oil and soy. Before he begins he visits his mother, Joyce (Barbara Streisand) in New York. While there, she tells him of a crush she had on a certain Andrew Margolis before she met his father while on a trip to Florida. During the night, Andrew decides to try and find this Andrew Margolis on the internet. He discovers that there is one in San Francisco and that he fits his mother’s description. The next morning, he invites his mother to accompany him on his business trip (adding San Francisco as the final stop). And so begins ‘The Mother of all Road Movies’ as the 2 travel across the United States with Andrew trying to sell his product and putting up with his mother’s constant interference.
An average comedy about 2 neurotics trying to get to know each other lacks the chemistry that would have made this work (for example Howard and his mother in Big Bang Theory). I felt that the interplay between Seth and Barbara was competitive, as if they were trying to ‘out-neurotic’ the other. There were however some moments of hilarity that did somewhat save the film from being a total loss.

Hit and Run / Délit de Fuite by / par David Palmer / Dax Sheppard

Romantic action comedy about a former getaway driver (Dax Sheppard) who leaves the witness protection program in order to drive his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to Los Angeles for the job of her dreams.
Charlie Bronson (his assumed name) entered the witness protect program four years ago after giving a witness statement that sent the accused to jail. Living in a small town, he met and is now living with Annie. One particular day, Annie is called in to see her boss. On her way she encounters Randy (Tom Arnold), the Federal Marshal assigned to protect Charlie. They talk a little; she leaves; Randy spills his coffee; quickly jumps out of his car which continues to roll down the hill towards a house where two children are playing in the front yard. Randy starts shooting at the car, terrifying the children. This is witnessed by the mother and Charlie. He goes out and invites Randy in. Randy explains other incidences where he fired his gun.
During the interview with her boss, Annie is told that her idea for a conflict resolution program has been accepted. The only hitch is that she will have to go to Los Angeles. When she tells Charlie of this, he decides to leave the witness protection program and drive her to Los Angeles – the scene of his former criminal life. It gets very complicated when Randy, Annie’s ex-boyfriend Gil (Michael Rosenbaum) and Bronson’s former gang led by Alex Dimitri (Bradley Cooper) start to chase the couple.
Very funny film poking fun at the clichés rampant in most car chase films and succeeds in avoiding becoming entrapped in those very same clichés. The characters are well developed, complex and lovable with the black and white being separated by a vast grey zone.

Hyde Park on Hudson by / par Roger Michel

This film is a historical dramatization of a pivotal event just prior to the start of WWII, which affected the outcome of the war. The film is loosely based on the diaries and letters of Daisy Suckley (played by Laura Linney), the fifth cousin of Franklin D Roosevelt (credibly interpreted by Bill Murray). The film tells the story of her special relationship with the President of the United States and the Royal visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England (Samuel West and Olivia Coleman, respectively) from June 7 to 12, 1939. The visit was historically significant as it was the first time since independence in 1776 that the Royal Family has set foot on American soil. With Hitler threatening to unleash a devastating war on Europe and Britain, King George realised the need for American support and Roosevelt felt that closer ties were necessary.
The film opens with Daisy being summoned to the home of FDR’s mother (Elizabeth Wilson) in Hyde Park on Hudson. He is suffering from his regular bout of sinus difficulty and she was the only one available. When she arrives, the first thing that FDR does is show her his stamp collection. From that moment on Daisy becomes an intimate part of his life and she is involved in the complexities of his domestic establishment. International affairs added to the mix as FDR’s wife Eleanor (Olivia Williams), mother and his secretary Missy (Elizabeth Marvel) all play a part in making the Royal visit a memorable one.
The most potentially disturbing element of the film is the ‘tarnishing’ of FDR’s reputation as one of the best Presidents of the United States. The film portrays FDR as a womanizer and putting ‘pleasure’ ahead of his duties as President. The question then arises:  Was this the ravings of a love-struck woman or a twisted interpretation of the British filmmaker or just simply cinematic liberty? My take is that it is just a movie and we must approach it such. Just sit back and enjoy and don’t allow it to tarnish FDR’s reputation. To me it still stands up to all scrutiny.
