On November 4^th 1979, a group of militants storm the United States Embassy in Tehran and more than 50 of the staff are taken hostage. This was in retaliation for sheltering the recently deposed Shah. During the melee, 6 of the embassy staff escape and find shelter in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor (Victor Garber). Realising that their lives are in danger – the militants are pulling no stops to locate them and stop them from leaving Iran – the US State Department consults Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), a CIA specialist in ‘exfiltration.’ Mendez rejects all of the proposals put forth by the Department.  

Initially, he is at a loss for ideas. Mendez is inspired While watching ‘Battle for the Planet of the Apes ’ with his son, Mendez gets an inspiration, the 6 could be exfiltrated by developing a cover story – they are in Iran scouting locations for a science-fiction movie. He is able to convince supervisor Jack O’Donnell (Bryan Cranston) that this idea is the only option that could work but in order for it do so, it must be as real as possible. He contacts Hollywood make-up artist John Chambers (John Goodman) who in turn gets in touch with film producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). To increase credibility, they set up a phony studio and publicise their plan to make a ‘science-fiction movie’ called ‘Argo’ and that a team of Canadian filmmakers will be sent to Iran to scout for locations. The 6 are given fake IDs and they are briefed on what to say in order to safely pass through airport security. 

Time is of the essence. As Mendez is preparing for the exfiltration, the militants are busy reconstructing shredded documents in order to identify who the 6 are and where they are hiding. 

Affleck has crafted a film that superbly captures the hysteric rage that had gripped Iran during this period. The Iranian militants refused to let go and went to great length, even to the point of über-excessive obsession. Though the outcome was already known, we were on the edge of our seats hoping and praying that they remain ahead of the militants and make it out of Iranian airspace.

Ce fut en représailles pour avoir abrité le Shah récemment déposé. Au cours de la mêlée, 6 du personnel de l'ambassade s'échappe  et trouve refuge dans la maison de Ken Taylor (Victor Garber), l'ambassadeur Canadien. Se rendant compte que leur vie sont en danger – les militants irons juste qu’au bout pour les localiser et de les empêcher de quitter l'Iran – le département d'État des États-Unis consulte Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), un spécialiste de la CIA dans  « exfiltration ». Mendez rejettes toutes les propositions mises en avant par le ministère. 

Au départ, il est à perte pour des idées. Mendez est inspiré en regardant « Battle for the Planet of the Apes » avec son fils, Mendez obtient une inspiration, les 6 pourrait être exfiltré en développant une histoire de couverture – ils sont en Iran, repérages pour un film de science-fiction. Il est capable de convaincre superviseur Jack O'Donnell (Bryan Cranston) que cette idée est la seule option qui pourrait marcher mais pour  le faire, il doit être aussi réel que possible. Il entre en contact avec John Chambers (John Goodman), un maquilleur d’Hollywood, qui   à son tour se met en contact avec le producteur de cinéma Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). Pour renforcer la crédibilité, ils installent un studio bidon et diffuse  leur intention pour faire un « film de science-fiction » appelé « Argo » et qu'une équipe de cinéastes Canadiens sera envoyée à l'Iran pour les repérages. Les 6 ont reçoit des fausses papiers et ils sont  briefer sur ce qu'il faut dire pour traverser en toute sécurité par la sécurité aéroportuaire.   

Le temps est de l'essence. Comme Mendez se prépare pour l'exfiltration, les militants sont occupés à reconstruire les documents déchiquetés afin d'identifier qui sont les 6 et où ils se cachent.  

 Affleck a conçu un film qui capte superbement la rage hystérique qui avait saisi l'Iran durant cette période. Les militants Iraniens ont refusé de laisser aller et alla à la grande longueur, même jusqu'à l'obsession über-excessive. Même que le résultat était déjà connu, nous avons été sur le bord de nos sièges en espérant et en priant qu'ils restent un pas en avant des militants et se rendent hors de l'espace aérien Iranien.
