Argo by / par Ben Affleck

On November 4th 1979, a group of militants storm the United States Embassy in Tehran and more than 50 of the staff are taken hostage. This was in retaliation for sheltering the recently deposed Shah. During the melee, 6 of the embassy staff escape and find shelter in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor (Victor Garber). Realising that their lives are in danger – the militants are pulling no stops to locate them and stop them from leaving Iran – the US State Department consults Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), a CIA specialist in ‘exfiltration.’ Mendez rejects all of the proposals put forth by the Department.
Initially, he is at a loss for ideas. Mendez is inspired While watching ‘Battle for the Planet of the Apes ’ with his son, Mendez gets an inspiration, the 6 could be exfiltrated by developing a cover story – they are in Iran scouting locations for a science-fiction movie. He is able to convince supervisor Jack O’Donnell (Bryan Cranston) that this idea is the only option that could work but in order for it do so, it must be as real as possible. He contacts Hollywood make-up artist John Chambers (John Goodman) who in turn gets in touch with film producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). To increase credibility, they set up a phony studio and publicise their plan to make a ‘science-fiction movie’ called ‘Argo’ and that a team of Canadian filmmakers will be sent to Iran to scout for locations. The 6 are given fake IDs and they are briefed on what to say in order to safely pass through airport security.
Time is of the essence. As Mendez is preparing for the exfiltration, the militants are busy reconstructing shredded documents in order to identify who the 6 are and where they are hiding.
Affleck has crafted a film that superbly captures the hysteric rage that had gripped Iran during this period. The Iranian militants refused to let go and went to great length, even to the point of über-excessive obsession. Though the outcome was already known, we were on the edge of our seats hoping and praying that they remain ahead of the militants and make it out of Iranian airspace.

“In war the first casualty is the truth” / « Dans la guerre la première victime est la vérité »

A triptych of 3 monologues based on news stories and real events surrounding the tragedies of war.
A)     My Pyramids: Based of the case of United States Army Reserve Soldier who was one of 11 soldiers convicted in 2005 of sexual torture of Iraqi prisoners during the American occupation.
B)      Harrowdown Hill: Based on British weapons expert Dr David Kelly who died suspiciously 2 days after talking to a reporter in 2003 about Britain’s role in the invasion of Iraq.
C)      Instruments of Yearning: Based on the detention and torture of Nehrjas Al-Saffarh and her children by the Jihaz al-Haneen, the secret police of the Ba'ath Party in 1963.

Of the 3 monologues the 3rd was by far the strongest, effectively capturing the horrors of Saddam’s regime and the hope of those that resisted. The performance of Alexandra Valassis was absolutely superb and engaging. I loved the way she engaged the audience.
In regards to Sarah Marchand’s performance I felt that the incident as described was sensationalized tabloid fodder and somewhat insulting. I was anxious for it to end.
With regards to the 2nd monologue, it was a bit unclear as to what was happening. It was engaging but it didn’t really bring out the emotional state that the real Dr Kelly would have been feeling.

Jean Félix Mailloux’s most ambitious project to date came to fruition last night as he crossed paths with renowned pianist François Bourassa and 5 other musicians. An emotionally charged excursion into the imagination of this versatile bassist and composer, Mailloux’s music straddles the region of the musical universe where jazz, classical and world-beat (Japanese, Eastern European and Mediterranean were prominent) combine to form a dream-like sound that was mainly soothing and at times playful. The chord changes were fast, furious and well-timed and executed,

   Burke & Van Dyck

In a seedy Manchester gym, corner men Rex and his apprentice Vinnie are preparing for a key matchup in a boxing tournament. Their boy Little T is favoured to win but gangster elements have entered into the picture. Doxy, whose reputation has barred him from all boxing gyms, has other ideas. Rex and Vinnie seek to take advantage of this. This is a well written and well performed and enjoyable nasty and brutal comedy that superbly shows that things are rarely what they seem to be. The chemistry between Rosenstein and Moore is compelling as they play off each other’s aspirations and insecurities. Their mastery of the Manchester dialect is perfect.

“The hardest thing about work is other people – hearing what they think.
You wonder if there’s a kind of work where people are all alone – really all alone.”-Oracle/Caro

Delphine Bienvenu (as Oracle / Claro), Jean-Robert Bourdage (as the Manager), Trent Pardy (as the Display Assistant) and France Rolland (as the Cosmetic Salesperson) star as Wal-Mart employees in this difficult, dark, surreal fantasy comedy as they recount two parallel stories – Céline Dion’s temporary retirement to take care of her first born and the horrific account of an unknown Isabelle Côté who was abused by her family for 17 years.
The two stories had appeared on opposite pages of a Quebec tabloid and the lines between them often being blurred to the point that the audience would be confused as to what was happening. This actually makes this piece a powerful statement on the dangers of modern society’s grotesque fascination and often deification of celebrities and the average person’s desire to be just like them; a thought provoking play that is not for the faint of heart or for seeking an evening    of entertainment.

Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) is, alongside Picasso, one of the most famous Spanish painters. He is the last of the surrealist painters. His body of works were multi-faceted, not only paintings but included sculpture, film and theatre and embodied a love of all that is gilded and excessive.  His constant self-promoting, his eccentric manners and attention-grabbing public actions often overshadowed his art. This film which contains a wealth of archival documents tries to answer the question as to whether Dalí was simply an eccentric genius, a paranoid madman or both.
