A generous offering of  electro-disco (circa  early 80s) with a touch of Kraftwerk (circa Computer World)  and a dash of soul made Selinedion's set engaging and enjoyable to listen to. The switch over to the next trio of artists was a very familiar melody containing the phrase 'na-na-na …' in the chorus.

The final attendance of 13,591 enthusiastic 'piknikers' on Day 1 of Piknic Electronik broke all previous records for all previous Electronik or Igloofest events. When I was returning home around 6pm, the lineups for all the bars, eateries and at the ticket-booth were all extremely long. I wanted to get something to eat before I left but quickly changed my mind. The line up at the ticket-booth extended way past the Metro entrance.

Parc National de Plaisance

Wonderful Wetlands with Bountiful Beauty

Reviewed by Nancy Snipper

No better name could describe this park. Its unique nature ushers in a supremely serene experience. All kinds of pleasures unfold before you, for this serene park is as precious as a timeless secret.  Seekers of splendour and surprise will feel inspired.
Cocooned in this bastion of Northern Bayous are lush forests of exquisite daintiness; they unfold before you into a tapestry brimming in glowing verdant vistas; no painter’s palette can match the appealing effect of Plaisance’s “pretty in green” – not to mention the subtle flowering hues of its plants.

Amidst the graceful leafy growth is a setting bathed in aquatic scenes: bays, marshes, ponds, petites and expansive peninsulas, aptly called Presqu’iles greet the eye.

Although the  park is small – about 28 square kilometres it's matrix of cycling trails totals 40 kilometres.

 There are three major walking trails ranging  from 1 km to 6 km.

The Zizanie-des-Marais walk on the suspension bridge is special.

The Zizania Palustras (wild rice) is a robust. aquatic annual grass that produces large grains eaten by people and wildlife.

Kayaking and canoeing can also stir the visitor’s senses, as it did mine.

Only 148 kilometres north-west of Montreal in Quebec’s Outaouais region – Park de Plaisance benefits from the gentle breeze of the Ottawa River and its fertile ecosystem.
One of the most striking aspects of this park is  that 250 different bird species live here. The birdsong is non-stop and the variety of “music” created by the aviary choir is remarkable. I spotted a bright yellow goldfinch, a pileated woodpecker, a rose-breasted grosbeak, some robust looking robins and lots of red-winged black birds. The park plays home to all kinds of ducks and bigger winged wonders: vultures, buzzards, eagles and Kingfisher herons.

The park’s many marshes include the shrub swamp, the silver marsh, and the arborescent swamp that happens in spring. What a wonder to behold!

More than half of Quebec’s indigenous mammal species live here. One can see moose, muskrats (I saw one swimming towards its underwater shore home while I was canoeing), smoky shrew and the southern flying squirrel and groundhogs, even coyotes, wolves and lots of beavers. Keep your eye out for amphibians.

On June 10th, the park is almost repossessed by thousands of turtles: painted ones, snapping ones, and at least seven more different types. You can spot them along the bicycle paths.
One of the most moving, hands-on and easy to understand exhibits is called the Floating Gardens displayed inside the lovely Discovery and Visitors Centre. Here I learned that several rare trees grow right in the park, but they are threatened. They include: the hackberry with its cork crest bark, the red pine, the white spruce and other green kindred gems such as bittercross, striated coral root, Virginia mountain-mint and some odd but beautiful flowering plants are all threatened.  But the list in the wetlands here continues to include prickly horwort and Englemann’s Cyperus. Not spectacular to look at, nonetheless, these plants are vital to the continuum of the ecosystem.
As for the maintenance and recreational enjoyment of the park – thankfully Plaisance came into the nurturing protective hands of Sepaq in 2002.
Visitors can discover that there is more than what meets your eye: the secret lies in its past through archaeology and historical ownership and use.
If you fall in love with Plaisance, check out the unique camping options there, and across from the area, you have access to the long gorgeous beach for swimming.

I shared the enjoyment of this park with the Montreal Adventures and Active Meetup  group, some of whom took the photos appearing in this article.
A special thank you to professional photographer, Cindy Thomas. The majority of the photos were taken by her.

Talisman Theatre presents “Me and You” written by Talia Hallmona and Pascal Brullemans

Talisman Théâtre présente « Me and You (Moi et l’Autre)» écrit par Talia Hallmona et Pascal Brullemans

At MAI (Montréal, Arts Interculturels) from May 18-21 2016 @ 8pm (Matinee Saturday @ 3pm)
Au MAI (Montréal, Arts Interculturels) de 18 à 21 Mai 2016 @ 20:00 (Matinée Saturday @ 15:00)

Directed by Arianna Bardesono; English translation by Allison Bowie;
Performed by Mirian Katrib (Talia) and Kathleen Stavert (Julie).
Mise en scène par Arianna Bardessono; Traduit en Anglais par Allison Bowie;
Interprété par Mirian Katrib (Talia) et Kathleen Stavert (Julie)

This moving and enlightening play is an exploration of the issues of integration and identity of immigrants into their adopted society.It is a fictionalized semi-autobiographical account of Talia’s experiences after emigrating to Quebec when she was 12 years old. The story unfolds through a series of 'miniature' acts, written as if posted on a private diary. Talia has a Greek first name; her mother is Italian and her father is Egyptian. The story begins on her family's  last day in Egypt. Upon her arrival in Laval, Talia meets Julie Sirois, a tough rebellious teen. Talia wants to be her. They become best friends as Julia teaches her how to  become herself. The play takes on a surreal element when Julie tragically dies in an automobile accident. Julie's spirit lives on through Talia.
The translation works well and shows that the questions of integration and identity affect everyone universally. We are all in one way or another faced with integrating into society and discovering who we really are.
The chemistry between the two principle characters was emotionally engaging. The performance and dramaturgy was A1.

Fringe-for-all – May 30 Mai @ Café Campus – Festival launch / Lancement du festival
A rapid-fire foretaste (from one to two minutes each) from most of the local artists to try and sufficiently tantalize our taste buds to get us to come and see their show. This year’s free-for-all will not be a determining factor in my decisions on what to see during the Fringe as I did not stay for it. However as usual, I will decide based on this basic premise – What is closest to now? – figuring in the venue, the length of current show and the start of the next. I usually stay in the same venue, so I tend to choose one where I have not yet seen any shows. This adds a sense of ‘adventurous randomness’ to my Fringing. If there is a choice, I go by word-of-mouth and the synopsis written in program.

June 04 Juin @ Espace Freestanding Room
18h30 Atomic City, Yarn Productions
playwrights and performers / dramaturges et artistes: Jeff Gandell and Mariana Vial
director / metteur en scène: Sara Rodriguez
This espionage comedy-thriller is set just before the first atomic explosions in Japan (that ended WWII), in the 'secret' city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In September 1942, General Leslie R. Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, approved the acquisition of 59,000 acres of land along the Clinch River, 20 miles west of Knoxville, Tennessee . It was to be the home of the uranium enrichment plants (K-25 and Y-12), the liquid thermal diffusion plant (S-50), and the pilot plutonium production reactor (X-10 Graphite Reactor). The plan was to process enough fuel to detonate the world's first atomic bomb. Great measures were taken to ensure absolute secrecy. Almost all of city's 75,000 inhabitants had no idea of what they were working on.
This is a fictitious account of two of its inhabitants – a 'full of himself' physicist and his assistant. They develop a stormy love-hate relationship. The story is retold from the perspective of each character – a kind 'he said, she said'. Engaging and well expressed with perfect precision with the gag lines. Set design perfectly reflects the era.
The next show is the 9th at 20h30 – only 10 shows remain.

18h00 Wasteland, Sex T-Rex, Toronto
playwright / dramaturge: Seann Murray; director / metteur en scène: Alec Toller;
choreographer / chorégraphie: Kaitlin Morrow;
cast / distribution: Josef Addleman, Connor Bradbury, Julian Frid, Kaitlan Morrow, Seann Murray
Fringe regulars, Sex T-Rex return for the sixth year in a row with another hilarious and imaginative parody of action movies. After last year's blockbuster award-winning hit 'Swordplay', which tackled swashbuckling action a la 'Three Musketeers' with a touch of fantasy, this comedy troupe ambitiously tackles 1980s classic post-apocalyptic thriller. All of the elements are there – an evil sadistic warlord, hungry cannibalistic mutants, an unlikely hero with his guide and sidekick (in this case a talking dog), the search for a Holy Grail (in this case Graceland) and much more. Exciting well- executed special effects – all done without the use of CGI.

Holly's alter ego, Miss Sugarpuss, is in trouble. As you may recall, six years ago, an epic battle between Holly and Miss Sugarpuss ended with a barrage of gunshots... Miss Sugarpuss had died? Not so! … She has hiding out in the Paris underground, merely existing from one dead end gig to the next... vainly trying to resuscitate her career as an artist. When a mysterious stranger appears, her very existence and perception of reality are questioned.
Excellently written play. Evokes a similar seedy jazz-influenced feel as did the films of John Cassavetes. Holly's talents as an actress, singer, dancer and playwright came through with flying colors; you must add her to your must-see list.

19h15 The Mysteries of the Unseen World of the Clavis Argentum, R'Iyeh City Theatre Company
A group of ten acolytes of the Mystical Order of the Clavis Argentum (holders of the Silver Key) accompanied by a live band, have called this assembly to reveal for the first time in history the secrets of humanity's true origins, how to avoid its ultimate calamity and achieve enlightenment. The evening unfolds in the form of a cabaret show with a plot. Each acolyte would be called up on stage by the leader of the order (played by Matt Risk, who also wrote the play), to demonstrate through his/her performance, a certain aspect of these ancient mysteries. But when human beings dabble in the black arts things can go horribly wrong. An on-the-edge-and-hold-tight-to-your-seats multidisciplinary work that will change your perception of reality.

A Perfect Picture is an abstract retelling of photojournalist, Kevin Carter, who was a member of the Bang Bang Club (a group of four young men who with their cameras, documented the final blood-soaked days of Apartheid). Well written and performed; Laurent McCuaig-Pitre is definitely a rising star. His chameleon-like transformations between the different characters and stages Kevin's life, and his engaging storytelling techniques indicates that super stardom is within his grasp – a true natural talent.

18h00 The McSorley and Chung Magic Hour
playwrights / dramaturges: Derrick Chung and Grant McSorley
director / metteur en scène: Marc Trudel

What was essentially hyped as a one-of-a-kind magic show turned out to be a typical one that would only interest and baffle young children at a birthday party. None of the tricks performed baffled and some bordered on the absurd. The performances were infantile and unengaging.

Messy Bitch, Grit'n Gusto
playwrights / dramaturges: Jessica Rae and Renée Sawtelledirector / metteur en scène: Hanna Dorozio

A wildly entertaining anecdotal story about a woman who transforms herself from an accommodating walk-all-over-me, always be a nice lady to a loudmouthed, acutely displeased and whiskey-soaked messy bitch. Adeptly combining puppetry and physical performance, Jessica Rae pokes fun at the word 'bitch' and what it really means.

14h15 Bushel and Peck: Love at the Edge of Humanity, Jamesy Productions
written and performed by / écrit et interprété par: Stephanie Morin-Robert and Alastair Knowles
This delightfully charming and hilarious work combines physical comedy and clown performance with contemporary dance and circus stunts. Exquisite performances by both Stephanie and Alastair, immerse the audience in the curious reality of the world in which our two protagonists live. Bushel and Peck are two naive, innocent and curious, but a little bizarre, creatures. They are quite content living in their world of darkness. But when Bushel discovers light ...

16h00 Thunderfoot, Life and Death
written and performed by / écrit et interprété par: Aaron Malkin;
written and directed by / écrit et mis en scène par: Chloe Ziner
Thunderfoot is a Scandanavian folktale about a boy who tries to protect a giant from being killed by angry villagers. All of the personalities and special effects were performed by Aaron. Despite his obvious talent, of which there were moments, it just didn't quite work. I would have prefered if parts of the show would had been animated either on video or with the use of shadow puppets.

In Evolution, in celebration of Jo-Mé Dance Theatre's fifth anniversary, the dance company presents a retropective of their most popular works. Six works were presented, showing the eclectic diversity of Jo-Mé's repertroire giving this reviewer a desire to see more. Each piece went beyond the mere performance of stunning movements – and many of them were – but an intense exploration of a variety of important physiological, social, and psychological topics.
