Dans Un Monde Meilleur / Haevnen

Susanne Bier

In a Better World / Haevnen

Susan Bier

Directed by / Direkte ved Susanne Bier

The Danish title “Haevnen” means revenge. Director’s latest film is a powerful and emotionally touching human drama about how to deal with bullies and is revenge ever justified.
Christian is the new kid in school. His father, Claus, has just moved from London to this idyllic Danish coastal town. Christian and Claus are having difficulty in coping with the recent death of their mother/wife due to cancer.
When Christian is introduced to the class, the teacher has him sit beside Elias, a mild-mannered boy who is frequently bullied. His parents, Anton and Marianne are separated and he has a younger brother. Anton is a Swedish doctor who treats victims of a sadistic war lord in a Sudanese refugee camp. Most of the victims are women.
After school, Christian and Elias walk together. Elias notices that his bicycle tires have been deflated. Christian begins to do the same with the other bikes. The school bully shows up and begins to threaten both Elias and Christian. This subsequently leads to the bully being hospitalised. Christian hit him with a bicycle pump and also threatened with a knife. Christian gives the knife to Elias, who hides it. Both boys lie to the police about the incident.
One day the war lord arrives at the refugee camp and demands that he be treated for his wounded leg. Anton is faced with a dilemma: Does he agree to treat him and under what conditions?
At home in Denmark, Anton is in the park with his two sons and Christian. His younger son gets into a scuffle with another boy and Anton attempts to break it up. The other boy’s father, who is a mechanic, slaps Anton in the face and tells him not to touch his son.
Both Elias and Christian are upset by Anton’s refusal to take action against the mechanic. They actually feel embarrassed. Christian talks Elias into taking revenge by bombing the mechanic’s vehicle. When they take cover, Elias notices two joggers approaching. Elias runs to warn them. The joggers are saved from harm but Elias ends up unconscious. When Christian tries to visit Elias in the hospital, Marianne (Elias’s mother) refuses to let him in saying that he is a murderer.
Distraught, Christian goes to a rooftop, desiring to jump, but Elias’s father rescues him.
A powerful film that shows how revenge can exact a heavy cost and that it is often more prudent to just let things go.

Finisterrae por / by / par Sergio Caballero

Surreal tale of two ghosts who, tired of living in the land of shadows, decide to take the Santiago Pilgrim Way to find the door back to the land of the living. One of them travels on a white steed, the other on foot or wheelchair. The ‘ghosts under the white sheets’ are played by: Pau Nubiola and Santí Serra.
This first feature film shows an obvious influence by Mexican director Alejandro Jodorowsky with its slow-pace, seemingly aimless narrative yet filled with stunning imagery (photography by Edward Gray). Cinefiles will also be able to detect a little bit of Monty Python. The absurd dialogue is voiced in Russian by Pavel Lukiyanov and Yuri Mykhaylychenko.
Along the road to Finisterre, they encounter strange creatures that can either be a hindrance or a help for their quest. Among them is a hippie, the proverbial wise owl, a group of charming reindeer and a demonic creature.
Overall, the result is an awkwardly odd film that many will not get the point.

The Conspirator / Le Conspirateur by / par Robert Redford

A historical thriller that brings to light the larger and more complex conspiracy to disrupt the federal government after the American Civil War (1861-1865) and to quickly execute those involved. After a massive man-hunt, one woman, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), among the eight arrested and charged for assassinating President Lincoln and their part in the conspiracy. She was the owner of the boarding-house in Maryland where the actor John Wilkes Booth (Toby Kebbell) and the others, including her son John (Johnny Simmons) who had escaped, met to plan the attacks. At the time President Lincoln's assassination was the most shocking murder in U.S. history and threatened to polarize the nation still reeling from a brutal civil war. Many in the government desired to vengefully have someone pay for this crime against the people and Mary Surratt was a convenient ‘scapegoat’. Her son was the target of a massive manhunt.
Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), 28-year-old Union war-hero, is assigned to defend Mary Surratt. At first he believes she is guilty, but soon realises that she is being used as bait to capture her son. Did Mary know of the plot against Lincoln and the government? If innocent, would she be willing to give up her son?
For the sake of expediency, Secretary of State Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline) and Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt (Danny Huston) ordered that the case be tried in a military tribunal even though Mary Surratt was a civilian.
As one views this chronicle of an important chapter in American history, the thought enters our mind; ‘has anything really changed: the Kennedy assassinations, the Twin Towers September 11th 2001 etc?’

Even the Rain / Même la pluie / Tambien la lluvia) by / par /por Iciar Bollain

An ambitious human drama that draws thought provoking parallels and blurs the lines between the present and the past and between reality and fiction. Sebastian (Gael García Bernal) is a film maker whose latest project is a historical accounting of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the New World. The main focuses of the film are on the experiences of Bartolomé de las Casas (a Spanish historian), Antonio de Montesinos (a Dominican friar) and Taino chief Hatuey who led the resistance against the Spanish conquest and subsequently crucified.
Sebastian, his producer Costa (Luis Toscar) along with the rest of the film crew arrives in Cochabamba Bolivia around the time of the water demonstrations against its privatization and fees for consumption.
Costa chose Bolivia because extras could be hired at only two dollars per day and they are willing to work long hours.
The film opens with Sebastian and Costa holding auditions for the extras. Costa tells Sebastian that they have reached their quota and to send the rest back home. Amongst those waiting in line, along with his daughter is Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri). Daniel protests, saying that they have come from afar and that there would be work for all who qualify. He refuses to leave until he is auditioned. Sebastian is so impressed with Daniel that he hires him to play the part of Hatuey.  As it turns out, Daniel is the leader amongst the demonstrators in Cochabamba. Sebastian, though he has the best of intentions in exposing the injustices of the past, has little patience for the present dilemma. It is severely tested when it affects his shooting schedule.
Well acted and tightly woven script with a lush cinematography that strongly shows the director’s intent, as stated before.

Honduras gained its independence from Spain in 1821, yet in all of its history this is only its fifth feature film in all of its history. For more details see: http://www.filmbirth.com/honduras.html
When I noticed the above mentioned detail in the 2011 Festivalissimo catalogue and that there was only one screening, I thought to myself that this was definitely “A Must-See.” So on Saturday May 28th, I mustered up all of the energy I could to be at the screening venue on time for its 1pm screening.
Prior to the screening, I briefly spoke to the founder and director of the festival, Elisa Pierra. My heart sank a bit, when she said that the copy received had no subtitles. Well, I have previously seen a Polish film (back in 2003) with no subtitles and did understand the gist of it. And I figured my current knowledge of Spanish would allow me an even greater understanding of this one. Alas such was not the case.
After the screening, I spoke again to the director, who was also was accompanied by a representative of the Honduran Consulate. I made a suggestion that in a future edition there be a retrospective of Honduran Cinema and screen every film released in its history. Both tended to agree that it would be worthwhile.
What I did pick up from the film was that it did seem to be a delightful comedy about sexual politics and the dangers of jealousy.

I Shot My Love by / par Tomer Heymann

Personal portrait of director’s developing relationship with the love of his life, German dancer Andreas Merk (http://www.andreasmerk.com/en/Default.aspx?iid=3&cid=0). However his outspoken and fiercely Israeli mother, Noa, was the real anchor for this documentary.
Tomer’s grandfather escaped Nazi Germany into Palestine. Seventy years later, the director returns to Germany to present his film “Paper Dolls” (2006 documentary about Filipino transgender migrant workers who performed as drag queens at night).
While in Berlin, he meets Andreas. Though the initial affair lasted only 48 hours, it sowed the seed that has since developed into a life-changing relationship between the two men.
Among his siblings, four brothers, only Tomer lives with his mother.  Andreas decides to come to Tel Aviv to be with him. Both men and Noa need to come to grips with the social and cultural implications of this Germanic and Israeli relationship.
