To Rome with Love / Rome mon Amour by / par Woody Allen

Woody Allen continues his ‘love letters’ to some of the world’s most attractive cities that he begun with “Vicky Christina Barcelona” and continued with “Midnight in Paris” (click here for review). Four distinct vignettes centering on both citizens of and visitors to ‘The Eternal City’: A.      Tourist visiting Rome, falls in love, becomes engaged and her parents arrive to meet the groom’s parents;
B.      An everyday predictable man becomes a ‘momentary celebrity’;
C.      A student of architecture falls in love with his girlfriend’s best friend who is staying with them as she visits Rome;
D.      A recently married Provincial couple wishing to settle in Rome and their separate misadventures as they prepare to meet his relatives.
This also marks Allen’s return to acting since “Scoop” of 2006 and boasts an all-star ensemble cast. The film had some ridiculous situations (like an amateur opera singer who can only sing in the shower –vignette A) but overall was amusing and entertaining.

A.      Un touriste en visite à Rome, tombe amoureux, se fiance et ses parents arrivent pour rencontrer les parents du marié;
B.      Un homme au quotidien prévisible devient une «célébrité momentanée» ;
C.      Un étudiant de l'architecture tombe en amour avec le meilleur ami de sa petite amie qui resté avec eux lors de sa visite à Rome;

Brave / Rebelle by / par Mark Andrews /Brenda Chapman

 'Brave' moves beyond the bold...  brazenness at its best!

                                                    {Reviewed by Nancy Snipper}

 There is nothing quite like seeing a fantastic Pixar animated film inside Ottawa's Empire Theatres Cinema, Rideau Centre; it is a great setting for this film - one that will rock you off your seat. In fact, you'll feel your back rocking into theater's comfy seats because of the movable seat-back feature that emulates a rocking chair feel.  I was either biting my nails at the scary parts, or laughing like a lunatic at the cleverest of scenes with dialogue to match. Brimming with wit, stunning beauty and suspense, the film is a treasure to behold. I opted for the 3D version of seeing it all unfold before my eyes. It all seemed so real.
Magic, might and malevolence send a message of their own in this film. Set in eleventh-century Scotland, the film is a pictorial masterpiece. The two directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman along with Pixar artists went to Scotland twice to study the landscape in great detail, so that the landscape, music and culture would be created in the film. In all, over 350 paintings of leaves, brush and moss went into the making of the film. There were 111,394 storyboards, not to mention that 111,700 individual hairs, styled into 1,500 curly locks on our bravest of heroines.
The story is original for Pixar and has its dark side, despite the heroine's flaming long curly red tresses that trundle down over her shoulders. Her name is Merida, and she shoots a mean arrow anywhere. The bow was given to her when she was a wee lass by Fergus, her über-stocky Scottish dad who is actually King of the DunBroch clan. Barely reaching his waist is his pretty perfectionist wife, Queen Elinor. Fergus lost part of his leg in a bear attack. That evil bear, called Mor'du reappears at the end of the film. We discover he is in fact the wayward leader who left the other three clan leaders to try to make it on his own as leader of all of Scotland. His ambition brought him into contact with a witch who changed him into the bear we see on the screen - an all powerful one that eventually meets his match in Elinor. The plot unravels with complications, but here it is: Merida despises the fact her mother has groomed her for marriage. A fight ensues when the sons of the three clansmen (Dingwall, Macintosh and MacGuffin) vie for her hand showing off their might and utter macho silliness. This part of the film is hysterical: the men's behavior is more Neolithic. They are dunderheads. Their feats of strength do not impress Princess Merida. She shudders at the thought of having to give up her independence for one of these dolts. The way the clansmen show their affection for one another by beating each other up. Of course the Highland games show their prowess, but it is Merida who shoots the best arrow of them all, and since it was declared the first-born can vie for her, she wins the match - so to speak. She refuses all three of her suitors and takes off on her horse, ripping the tapestry of her family in front of her mother who is fuming about Merida’s stubbornness to stay single and refuting marriage.

 Will-o-the-wisps lead her to the very witch who was responsible for making Mor'du into a bear. She asks the witch to change her mother, but she did not expect her mother to become a bear. It is a fight to the finish to find a way to get her mom back again, and as it looks like Queen Elinor will face ‘bearhood' for the rest of her life, but magic takes place. Still Mor’du reappears and things begin to 'bear down' on everyone.
Without giving away the ending, I must say that I was crying when daughter and mother are reunited in a novel setting in a momentous and moving, if not suspenseful event.
The film explores the deep conflicts that can happen between and mother and daughter and this is very unusual for a Pixar work. The movie is meaty, magnificent and should be seen over and over again. After all, how many of us are capable of capturing, even with our 3D glasses the thousands of details and hundreds of characters that appear in this wondrously memorable film. 'Brave' is a powerful piece of remarkable cinematic genius. It combines a new kind of genre: a comedy of errors with tragic overtones.
'Brave's’ music employed dozens of authentic Scottish instruments and styles of music with dances, including reels and jigs - all  in Dolby Atmos sound - a first for Pixar. I just wish 'Brave' didn't have to end!

The Woman in Black / La Dame en Noir by / par James Watkins

During afternoon tea

There's a shift in the air

A bone-trembling chill

That tells you she's there

There are those who believe

That the whole town in cursed

But the house in the marsh

Is by far the worst

What she wants is unknown

But she always comes back

The spectre of darkness

The Woman in Black.
Supernatural thriller with a commonly visited concept: a stranger arrives in a remote village and uncovers a sinister secret. Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) lost his wife, Stella, when she gave birth to their son, Joseph (Misha Handley). Kipps has been grieving for four years. Bentley, his boss at the law firm, warns him that if he doesn't get over it soon, he could lose his position. Bentley gives Kipps one last chance and sends him to a remote village to sort out the affairs of an eccentric wealthy woman, Alice Drablow, who has just recently passed away.
On the train, he meets Sam Daily (Ciarán Hinds), who invites him for supper to meet his wife, Elizabeth. When Kipps arrives at the village, many tell him to take the next train back, saying that all has been taken care of and the woman's affairs are in order. Jerome, the local solicitor, hands him a file of 'all' the 'pertinent' information. The villagers do not welcome Kipps’ presence and they try to prevent him from finding out about a tragic secret. Kipps takes the folder handed to him and heads out to the widow's estate, the Eel Marsh House, located on an island in the marshlands.
While at the estate, Kipps hears footsteps and sees a woman dressed in black. The next day he is at the police station to report what he saw. Two boys walk into the station. They have brought their sister Victoria who has swallowed some lye. She dies in Kipps’ arms. The villagers believe that the ‘woman in black’ is seeking revenge for having lost someone very special, her own child. They believe that because Kipps has seen her, their children are dying. No one is safe.
The atmosphere of the film is creepy and reminds one of recent ‘Japanese Vengeful Phantom films’ and continues the traditional Hammer Studio classic gothic horror tales of the 1950s and 60s.

In Darkness / Sous Terre by / par Agnieszka Holland

A complex gritty account of a little known phenomenon that occurred in Nazi occupied Poland; in order to escape deportation and or incarceration in the concentration camps, many Jews took refuge underground in the labyrinths of the many sewage systems in the major cities. They lived in constant fear of being detected by the Gestapo or Polish collaborators, co-existing with the rats and the stench of sewage and rotting corpses. This film centers on one such group who hid in the sewers for 14 weeks and the deep-seated humanity of one man. Leopold Socha, a.k.a. Poldek, works as a sewer worker in the Nazi occupied city of Lvov, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine). He supports his wife, Wanda, and his daughter and supplements his income by looting homes formerly owned by displaced Jews. He does this along with his young colleague and sidekick Szczepek.  At the onset of the film he is somewhat anti-Semitic as many of the Roman Catholic Poles (or Ukrainian) were prone to be. The Nazi occupation had a tendency to bring it to the forefront. Also, Poldek knows that any contact with a Jew would jeopardize his life and that of his family. Therefore he initially refused to help a group of Jews he discovers hiding in the sewers. He reluctantly accepts and demands that they pay him but as time goes on, Poldek realises that this is the right thing to do.
This is a powerful tale of a man who confronts his inner demons of prejudice and greed to succeed in this gargantuan humanitarian act that required an enormous amount of courage and self-sacrifice.

Safety Not Guaranteed / La Sécurité N’est Pas Garantie by / par Colin Trevorrow

"WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. I have only done this once before."

When the editor-in-chief of Seattle Magazine, Bridget goes around the table seeking the next headlining story, all suggestions are rejected until above classified ad is shown on the screen. She assigns writer Jeff (Jake Johnson) to go to Ocean View, Washington to find and profile the man behind the ad. To assist him, interns Darius and Arnau (Aubrey Plaza and Karan Soni respectively) accompany him. The ad is unusual and preposterous. All they have to go on is the PO Box number.
When the threesome check into the hotel, Jeff reveals that he has a hidden agenda. When Jeff was younger, his parents used to travel to Ocean View for their summer vacations. He had developed a love interest with Liz, who lives in the beach community and he now wants to track her down. Darius, asserting herself as the lead reporter, stakes out the PO Box number. Arnau assists her. Kenneth (Mark Duplass) turns up. She finds out he works stocking shelves at the local grocery with canned goods. Pretending to file a note of praise for Kenneth, she succeeds in getting his address.
Jeff is able to reconnect with Liz but when he opens up to her, she rejects him. He returns to the group. He attempts to answer Kenneth’s ad but Kenneth sees right through him and drives him off his property. Darius poses as a candidate to accompany Kenneth. His initial reaction is one of leeriness. He thinks Darius is working for ‘secret agents’ who want to steal his ‘time machine.’ Despite this, Kenneth agrees to start a series of ‘training exercises.’ Darius gains his trust and in spite of the ‘absurdity’ of the mission, she admires his dedication and skills.
A well-conceived ‘Underdog’ tale with a very original bent.
