The Conspirator / Le Conspirateur by / par Robert Redford

A historical thriller that brings to light the larger and more complex conspiracy to disrupt the federal government after the American Civil War (1861-1865) and to quickly execute those involved. After a massive man-hunt, one woman, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), among the eight arrested and charged for assassinating President Lincoln and their part in the conspiracy. She was the owner of the boarding-house in Maryland where the actor John Wilkes Booth (Toby Kebbell) and the others, including her son John (Johnny Simmons) who had escaped, met to plan the attacks. At the time President Lincoln's assassination was the most shocking murder in U.S. history and threatened to polarize the nation still reeling from a brutal civil war. Many in the government desired to vengefully have someone pay for this crime against the people and Mary Surratt was a convenient ‘scapegoat’. Her son was the target of a massive manhunt.
Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), 28-year-old Union war-hero, is assigned to defend Mary Surratt. At first he believes she is guilty, but soon realises that she is being used as bait to capture her son. Did Mary know of the plot against Lincoln and the government? If innocent, would she be willing to give up her son?
For the sake of expediency, Secretary of State Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline) and Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt (Danny Huston) ordered that the case be tried in a military tribunal even though Mary Surratt was a civilian.
As one views this chronicle of an important chapter in American history, the thought enters our mind; ‘has anything really changed: the Kennedy assassinations, the Twin Towers September 11th 2001 etc?’
