When 84-year-old Kimani Ng’ang’a Maruge (Oliver Musila Litondo) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KimaniMaruge) hears this, he goes to the school desiring to learn how to read. He is met by Jane Obinchu (Naomie Harris), the school’s principal. Her colleague Alfred (Alfred Munya) tells him that he needs pencils and an exercise book.
Maruge returns the next day only to be told that the school already has too many pupils and that he needs to have a school uniform. When Jane tells her husband Charles (Tony Kgoroge), who works for the government in Nairobi, he advises her to be cautious.
The next day, as Jane has just hung up from a frustrating call with Mr Kipruto (Vusi Kunene), Maruge reappears in an improvised uniform. Jane is so moved by Maruge’s persistence that she invites him to sit in class. When Maruge tells her that his eyesight is not good, Jane places him in the front. Maruge and the children immediately connect.
Maruge is attentive but the slightest thing can trigger painful memories of his struggle along with the Mau Mau who resisted British rule in 1953. When Alfred scolds him for not sharpening his pencil, Maruge has a breakdown when he recalls a traumatic incident that occurred during his imprisonment.
Meanwhile resentment, controversy and publicity increase. Jane is accused of many terrible things including that she is capitalizing on Maruge’s free publicity. Jane soon learns that she is being transferred to another school which is 300 miles away.
When her replacement arrives the children reject her and she leaves. Meanwhile Maruge travels to Nairobi to confront the Ministry of Education. To get Jane reinstated and to confirm his right to be educated, he shows the board his scars he still has from his being tortured by the British.
Maruge is in the Guinness Book of Records for being the oldest person to go to primary school and has spoken at the United Nations. He died in 2009.
