 A. K. A. - A Useful Life / Une Vie Utile 

The Cinemateca Uruguaya has been Montevideo’s art house cinema for over 50 years. Jorge (played by real-life Uruguayan film critic Jorge Jellinek) has been a loyal and devoted employee for 25 years. He spends his days changing reels, recording announcements and even doing voice-over translations. Jorge takes his job so seriously that he profusely apologises to the director of one particular film for a technical error that not even the most tech-obsessed cinéfile would have noticed.

When, due to dwindling attendance and diminishing support, the cinema is forced to close, Jorge has to exit the world of cinema and adjust to the real world. To that end he reaches out to a female patron of the Cinemateca, a lawyer.

Shot in black and white the film gives out a strong 1930s look which is considered to be “The Golden Age of Hollywood.” A poignant study into the mind of one who views the world through celluloid; for that matter the same could be said for those who look at the world via the printed page.

La Cinémathèque Uruguaya cinéma art de Montevideo depuis plus de 50 ans. Jorge (joué par real-life, critique de cinéma Uruguayen Jorge Jellinek) a été un employé fidèle et dévoué pendant 25 ans. Il passe ses journées à changeant des bobines, enregistrement des annonces et même faire des traductions de la voix-off. Jorge prend son travail au sérieux qu'il s'excuse abondamment au directeur d'un film particulier pour une erreur technique que ne même pas le cinéphile plus obsédé par tech aurait remarqué.

Lorsque, en raison de la diminution de fréquentation et soutien en baisse, le cinéma est obligé de fermer, Jorge doit quitter le monde du cinéma et de s'adapter à la réalité. À cette fin il atteint un mécène féminin de la Cinémathèque, un avocat.

Tourné en noir et blanc, que le film donne à un look années 1930 forte qui est considéré comme « L'âge d'or de Hollywood ». Une étude poignante dans l'esprit de celui qui regarde le monde par le biais de celluloïd ; d'ailleurs que pourrait en dire autant pour ceux qui regarde le monde via la page imprimée.

Historical drama about the little-known role of the Muslims played in the French resistance during the   Nazi occupation circa 1942. Younes (Tahar Rahim) is Algerian, young and illiterate. He makes a precarious living from the proceeds of a small-time black-market operation.

When Younes is caught, the police offer him freedom if he agrees to go undercover. They suspect that the Great Mosque of Paris is giving refuge to French Jews by providing forged identity documents. Its leader is the crafty Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit.

Michael Lonsdale obviously miscast as the crafty leader of the mosque of Paris, Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit despite his wonderful performance.

Drame historique sur le rôle méconnu joué par les Musulmans dans la résistance Française pendant l'occupation Nazie vers 1942. Younes (Tahar Rahim) est Algérien, jeune et analphabète. Il gagne sa vie précaire grâce au produit d'une petite opération de marché noir.

Lorsque Younes est attrapé, la police lui offre la liberté s'il accepte d'aller sous couverture. Ils soupçonnent la Grande Mosquée de Paris d'abriter des Juifs Français en fournissant de faux papiers d'identité. Son chef est le rusé Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit.

Michael Lonsdale s'est manifestement trompé d'incarnant le rusé chef de la mosquée de Paris, Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit malgré sa merveilleuse performance.

Van Gogh Trauernder alter Mann

An esoteric biopic spanning the final four years of Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), who is considered to be among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

 It is based on the following:

§  The artist’s personal letters to his brother Theo, fellow painter Paul Gauguin and others.

§  Common agreements regarding events in the artist’s life. This includes facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented.

In the filmmaker’s own words:

^·          “This is a film about painting and a painter and their relationship to infinity. It is told by a painter. It contains what I felt were essential moments in his life; this is not the official history – it’s my version. One that I hope could make you closer to him.” Wikepedia

As for this critic, Schnabel has succeeded – I do feel that I now know a lot more about van Gogh than before and have a greater appreciation of his paintings. Willem Dafoe gives a stunning and award-winning performance in the role of van Gogh.

Il est basé sur les points suivants:

§ Accords communs concernant les événements de la vie de l’artiste. Cela inclut les faits, les rumeurs et les moments inventés.

Dans les propres mots du cinéaste:

En ce qui concerne cette critique, Schnabel a réussi – je sens maintenant que j'en connais beaucoup plus sur van Gogh qu'auparavant et que j'apprécie davantage ses peintures. Willem Dafoe donne une performance superbe et primé dans le rôle de van Gogh.

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 - They’re Back!

It’s been 10 years since we met the odd couple of cops, and nine years in the script conception on the part of the bad cop of the duo – Patrick Huard who is also one of the producers along with François Flamand and Pierre Even (Item 7) with Seville as the distributor.

I had the rare chance to speak to the Alain DesRochers, the director of the movie which starts shooting May 22 and is slated to come out summer   2017. Hailing from Ottawa, he told me he is a real Canadian, and loves the idea of breaking down language barriers through the two cops reunited, bringing Montreal and Toronto together – the Anglo and Québécois guys – true buddies who no longer butt heads. Fresh eyes surely will enrich the vitality of the film, though the two protagonists are ten years older. Indeed, no novice to the craft, DesRochers has earned his own badge, having directed Nitro, Nitro Rush and Musée Eden. Always humble DesRochers said, “It’s an honour to direct these two great actors.”

He also revealed it was a challenge to do a comedic action film while ensuring to highlight the serious and sinister elements – to keep them strong and raw.

Producer François Flamand – and co-producer Pierre Even concurred –highlighted that the main raison d’être of reuniting the pair of unlikely but awfully likeable cops: “Everyone wanted to see them again. And this time, it is going to big much bigger in scope than the first film.”

Once again, the bilingual film with subtitles in both languages (Pierre Even highlighted that the first one set a precedent for subtitling this way), stars Colm Feore as Martin Ward – the bon (good) cop and Patrick Huard as David Bouchard – the bad cop. This action thriller is sure to be another blockbuster (the greatest audience success of any Canadian film marked the first one – directed by Eric Canuel. I can hardly wait to see it!

10 Cloverfield Lane by Dan Trachtenberg

This quasi-spiritual successor to Cloverfield (2008) is an in camera psychological drama with elements of science fiction about three individuals – two men and one woman – ‘surviving’ in a self-made bunker located in the middle of nowhere after an alleged ‘apocalyptic’ attack. The film echoes many classic tales of the same genre but mainly Christoph Behl’s The Desert and H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

After an argument with her boyfriend Ben, Michelle decides to leave New Orleans. Turning on the radio, she hears news of blackouts in major cities. Ben calls … distracted, Michelle has an accident … wakes up from a coma in a concrete room, chained to a wall. She discovers that she is in a bunker built by Howard, a survivalist. He tells her that he brought her there after the accident; that the Earth has been attacked and is now uninhabitable. Her only chance of survival would be staying with him in the bunker.  A short while later, she meets Emmett. Emmett helped Howard build the bunker and had forced his way into it. As the days and months move on, Howard’s behavior causes Michelle to wonder if it would be better to escape the bunker and take her chances outside – a question of which is the most dangerous monster?

The tight cast consists of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle, John Goodman, in his most ‘frightening’ role as Howard and John Gallagher Jr. as Emmett. The ending was somewhat disappointing and contrived.

 

Ce successeur quasi-spirituel à Cloverfield (2008) est un drame psychologique à huis clos, avec des éléments de science-fiction, au sujet de trois personnes qui « survivre » dans un self-made bunker au milieu de nulle part après une attaque« apocalyptique ». Le film fait écho à de nombreux contes classiques du même genre, mais surtout Le Désert de Christoph Behl et La Guerre des Mondes de H.G. Wells.

Après une dispute avec son petit ami Ben, Michelle décide de quitter la Nouvelle-Orléans. En allument la radio, elle entend des nouvelles de pannes d'électricité dans les grandes villes. Ben appelle ... distrait, Michelle à un accident ... se réveille d'un coma dans une pièce en béton, enchaîné à un mur. Elle découvre qu'elle est dans un bunker construit par Howard, un survivalistes. Il lui dit qu'il l'a amené là après l'accident; que la Terre a été attaqué et est maintenant inhabitable. Sa seule chance de survie est de rester avec lui dans le bunker. Un peu plus tard, elle rencontre Emmett. Emmett a aidé Howard de construire le bunker et avait forcé son entrer. Comme les jours et les mois se déplacent, le comportement de Howard provoque Michelle à se demander si elle serait mieux de risquer de s'échapper du  bunker et prendre ses chances en extérieurs – une question de savoir quel est le monstre le plus dangereux ?

Le casting serré se compose de Mary Elizabeth Winstead comme Michelle, John Goodman, dans son rôle le plus « effrayant », comme Howard et John Gallagher Jr. comme Emmett. La fin était un peu décevante et artificiel.
