Made In Dagenham by Nigel Cole

The Ford Motor factory in Dagenham, Essex, the industrial heart of England, had a workforce of 55,000 in 1968. Of these, 187 were women. The men worked in the gleaming new plant whereas the women had to work in the dilapidated River plant that had been built in 1920. As well the pay was 50 per cent less than that of the men.  The working conditions in the plant were horrible: no air conditioning, leaky roof etc.  This film is a hard-hitting and powerful account of these brave women who have had enough and set out to demand better working conditions and equal pay. They are led in this by quiet and unassuming housewife, Rita O’Grady (Sally Hawkins). Coerced into attending a meeting between union and Ford’s Head of Industrial Relations, Peter Hopkins, and encouraged by sympathetic union representative Albert (Bob Hoskins), Rita finds her voice and the women go on strike. A compelling heart wrenching drama that points out how difficult it is to correct human injustices. The unwillingness to change the status quo and even blaming the woman for the resulting hardships is clearly brought out (Men loved darkness rather than light). This film is an important documentation of a significant historical achievement.

Les hommes a travaillé dans la nouvelle usine étincelante tandis que les femmes ont à travailler dans le délabré L’Usine River qui avait été construit en 1920. Ainsi, la rémunération était de 50% inférieur de celui des hommes.  Les conditions de travail dans l'usine ont été horribles : sans l’air conditionné, fuite de toit etc. Ce film est un compte percutante et puissant de ces femmes courageuses qui ont avait suffisamment et énoncés d'exiger de meilleures conditions de travail et un salaire égal. Ils sont conduits dans ce par femme au foyer tranquille et sans prétention, Rita O'Grady (Sally Hawkins). Contraints d'assister à une réunion entre l'union et Ford Head of Industrial Relations, Peter Hopkins et encouragé par le représentant syndical sympathique Albert (Bob Hoskins), Rita trouve sa voix, et les femmes se mettre en grève. Ce  drame déchirant souligne comment  il est difficile de corriger les injustices humaines. La réticence à modifier le statu quo et même blâmer les femmes pour les épreuves liées est clairement mise en évidence (hommes aimés obscurité plutôt que la lumière). Ce film est une documentation importante d'une réalisation historique importante.
