Carnage by / par Roman Polanski

This deliciously black comedy exposes the superficiality and pretentiousness that is inherent when one side of a dispute attempts to teach the other side about correct and socially acceptable behaviour. Zachary Cowan and Ethan Longstreet are two eleven-year-old boys. As boys of that age are prone to do they get into a fight that unfortunately does not end well. Zachary picks up a stick and hits Ethan across his face causing injury to it, including his jaw and teeth.
Zachary’s parents, Alan (Christoph Waltz) and Nancy (Kate Winslet) are at the home of the Longstreets, Michael (John C. Reilly) and Penelope (Jodie Foster) in order to attempt reaching a civil resolve and to make sure that an incident like this does not reoccur. Yet, from the get-go, it is very clear that both sides are only concerned in a superficial manner. As the day wears on, the four ‘adults’ exhibit an ever increasing level of childish behaviour; the thin mask of parental civility waning.
Polanski offers up a delicious treat about manners and social decorums among two couples where none exists.  

Ce comédie noire délicieuse expose la superficialité et la prétention qui est inhérente lorsqu'un côté d'une dispute tente d'enseigner l'autre côté sur les comportements correct et socialement acceptable. Zachary Cowan et Ethan Longstreet sont deux garçons d'onze ans. Comme des garçons de cet âge sont enclins à faire qu'ils entrent dans une bagarre qui malheureusement ne se termine pas bien. Zachary ramasse un bâton et frappe au visage d’Ethan causant des blessures a ceci, incluant sa mâchoire et ses dents.

Les parents de Zachary, Alan (Christoph Waltz) et Nancy (Kate Winslet) sont au domicile des Longstreets, Michael (John C. Reilly) et Penelope (Jodie Foster) afin de tenter d’atteindre une résolution civile et de s'assurer qu'un incident comme celui-ci ne se reproduise pas. Pourtant, des le début, il est très clair que les deux camps ne sont concernés que d’une manière superficielle. Comme la journée avance, les quatre «adultes» faire preuve d’un niveau toujours croissante d’un comportement enfantin; le masque mince de civilité parentale en déclin.
Polanski propose une délicieuse gâterie sur les manières et décorums sociales entre les deux couples lorsqu’il n'en existe pas.

The Eye of the Storm / L’Œil de la Tempête by / par Fred Schepisi

Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) lives in a stately mansion situated in the Sydney suburb of Centennial Park. On her deathbed, she is being cared for by two nurses, Flora (Alexandra Schepisi) during the day and Mary (Maria Theodorakis) at night and a housekeeper, Lotte (Helen Morse). Elizabeth wants to choose the time of her death; in fact she wants total control over every aspect of her life and surroundings. Her two children, Basil (Geoffrey Rush) and Dorothy de Lascabanes (Judy Davis) are coming to visit, so Elizabeth asks her caretakers to dress her up. Both of her children have been away for a long time. Basil left to become an actor in London’s West-end. Dorothy married a French prince. Both are in need of money and consolation. They are hoping to get both from their mother as she nears death.
The film consists of many Shakespearian metaphors, mainly referring to King Lear. There is an exquisite chemistry between the three leads: Rampling, Rush and Davis.

Elizabeth veut choisir le moment de son décès; en fait, elle veut un contrôle total sur tous les aspects de sa vie et ses environs.

Ses deux enfants, Basil (Geoffrey Rush) et Dorothy de Lascabanes (Judy Davis) viennent  visiter, ainsi Elizabeth demande à ses soignants de l'habiller. Ses deux enfants ont été absentes pour une longue période. Basil a quitte pour devenir un acteur dans le West-end de Londres. Dorothy a épousé un prince Français. Les deux ont dans le besoin d'argent et de consolation. Ils espèrent de les obtenir de leur mère comme elle approche sa mort.
Le film se compose de plusieurs métaphores Shakespearienne, se référant principalement au Roi Lear. Il y a une chimie exquise entre les trois acteurs principaux: Rampling, Rush et Davis.

Trou Story / The Hole Story par / by Richard Desjardins / Robert Monderie

“Don’t know much about mines? That’s normal. Mines don’t talk, especially about their history...” opens this latest social-commentary by Desjardins and Monderie. In their usual hard-hitting style, they proceed to explore the history of mining in the regions of North-Eastern Ontario (Sudbury, Cobalt and Timmons) and Abitibi-Témiscamingue in North-Western Québec. The profits enjoyed by the mining companies were astronomical. The devastation to the environment and the local economy was deplorable.
The story begins with the discovery of nickel in Sudbury and continues with silver in Cobalt, gold in Timmins and copper in Rouyn. Acquiring the rights to the land was no problem as they were the law.
Often, the mining companies are owned by global conglomerates; pay no taxes, strip the land of all its resources and then leave. The ‘fruits’ of their labour are a ‘hole’ in the ground, polluted rivers and lakes and a population with no means of living.

«Vous ne connaissez riens des mines? Normale. Les mines ne parle pas beaucoup, surtout pas de leur histoire…» ouvre ce dernier commentaire social réalisé par Desjardins et Monderie. Dans leurs style habituellement percutante, ils procèdent à explorer l'histoire de l'exploitation minière dans les régions du nord-est de l'Ontario (Sudbury, Cobalt et Timmons) et l'Abitibi-Témiscaminque du nord-ouest de Québec.  Les bénéfices dont jouissent par les sociétés minières étaient astronomiques. La dévastation de l'environnement et sur l'économie locale était déplorable.
L'histoire commence avec la découverte de nickel à Sudbury et se poursuit avec l'argent à Cobalt, l’or à Timmins et le cuivre à Rouyn. Acquérir les droits sur les terres n'avait pas de problème car ils étaient la loi. Souvent les sociétés minières sont la propriété des conglomérats mondiaux; ne payer aucun impôt, dévêtir la terre de toute sa ressource et puis laisser. Les fruits de leur travail sont un «trou» dans le sol, les lacs et rivières polluées et une population sans les moyens de vivre.

All That I Love / Tout ce que j'Aime by / par Jacek Borcuch

In Poland 1981, a Polish youth, Janek along with two of his buddies (the rebellious Kazik and the affluent Diabel) and his brother Staszek, form a punk rock band called ATIL (All That I Love).
In 1981 Poland was in the grips of a socio-political crisis. Manifestations and political turmoil were ravaging the country and martial law declared in order to stem the Solidarity movement.
Janek's uses his father’s connections as an official of the local military police to secure rehearsal space for his band. Despite this, the lyrical content of the band’s music is in rebellion against Poland’s repressive policies against artistic freedom and political activism.
Basia is Janek’s love interest, but her father has forbidden them to see each other. The reason being is that Basia’s father is an active member of Solidarity. Janek and Basia continue to see each clandestinely.
Janek sends demo tapes to the organizers of a summer music festival. He also lends a copy to a neighbour. The band is accepted to play at the festival. When the neighbour attempts to return the tape, her husband intercepts them. The music of ATIL is subsequently banned. Yet, at the concert celebrating the end of the school year, the band defiantly plays the banned songs to the dismay of the neighbour’s husband (who was actually part of the censorship board) and to pleasure of the students, resulting in a pro-solidarity rally.
The film sends out a powerful message that personal and political ideals are often inseparable; a promising first feature.

En Pologne, 1981, un jeune Polonais, Janek avec deux de ses copains (Kazik le rebelle et Diabel le fortunés) et son frère Staszek, forment un groupe de punk rock appelé ATIL (Tout ce que j’Aime). 

En 1981, la Pologne était dans les poignées d'une crise sociopolitique. Des manifestations et des troubles politiques étaient qui ravageaient le pays et la loi martiale déclaré afin d'enrayer le mouvement de solidarité.
Janek utilise les connexions de son père en tant que représentant de la police militaire locale pour sécuriser l'espace de répétition pour son groupe. Malgré cela, le contenu lyrique de la musique du groupe est en rébellion contre la politique répressive de la Pologne contre la liberté artistique et l'activisme politique.
Basia est l’intérêt d’amour de Janek, mais son père leur a interdit de voir les uns les autres. La raison étant, c'est que le père de Basia est un membre actif de la solidarité. Janek et Basia continuent de se voir   clandestinement.
Janek envoie des démos aux organisateurs d'un festival estival de musique. Il prête également une copie à un voisin. Le groupe est accepté pour jouer au festival. Lorsque le voisin tente de retourner la cassette, son mari les intercepte. Par la suite la musique d'ATIL est interdite. Pourtant, au concert célébrant la fin de l'année scolaire, le groupe avec un aire de défi joue les chansons interdites à la consternation du mari de la voisin (qui était en effet un membre de la Commission de censure) et au plaisir des étudiants; ce qui entraîne un rassemblement pro-solidarité.
Le film envoie un message puissant que les idéaux personnels et politiques sont souvent inséparables; une   première long-métrage prometteuse.
