 From February 21 to March 3 Montréal en Lumière is featuring over 100 top world-class artists and chefs with the accent on Argentina.  70 concerts will take place in 24 different venues.

One of the two honorary co-presidents drummer, Daniel Piazzolla, grandson of Astor (father of tango), will be performing with Escalandrum, his jazz/tango sextet on March 2^nd, inside the atmospheric L’Astral. Having collaborated with Gloria Estevan and Chick Corea, Danilo Perez and other greats, Mr. Piazaolla is sure to wow the crowds.

Lumière's other co-honourary president is the incomparable classical pianist/composer Alain Lefèvre. One can anticipate the non-stop clapping, whistling and “bravos’ coming from every corner of the acoustically-perfect Maison Symphonique de Montreal during a concert of his melodic masterpieces on February 23^rd. A multi-award winner, Mr. Lefèvre will make musical history in the city with a  performance of original pieces from two of his albums, ‘Fidèles Insomnies’ (Blissfully Sleepless) and ‘Jardin d ’Images’. His compositions have mesmerized critics and classical piano lovers around the world. An inspirational genius, he received a ten-minute standing ovation from a crowd of 4000 when Lumière first lit up the stages of Montreal.14 years ago.

Stand-out concerts include a spectacular evening of ‘West Side Story’ Percussion and vocalists will bring to life the tragic love stories in an innovative manner. Argentine dance companies will wow with their wizard choreography. Opera soloists, include counter tenor Daniel Taylor in an all-Bach cantata program, and the scintillating soprano Marie-Josée Lord. Her hypnotic voice is inspiring and unique.

Also appearing are Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Daniel Lavoie to the Zombies and the acapella, beatbox boys of Voca people, plus a line-up of many local stars provide appeal to suit diverse tastes.
Tango addicts won’t want to miss the shows of La Pista Tango and La Pista Cabaret.

A symphony of salacious gourmet dishes further heightens the senses. Nineteen chefs from Argentina, seven from Philadelphia and four from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean along with two Argentinean wine producers will be cooking up a storm and pouring out vintage wines in 40 kitchens of Montreal as guest chefs pair up with local chefs. Argentinean chef, Gonzalo Aramburu will be serving a ten-course meal using the freshest of Argentinean products in his gourmet molecular dishes. Master chef, Francis Mallman who is also the festival’s honorary president will offer his seven-course meal that includes white fish cooked with salsa criolla and lamb confit with guajchalocro from Jujuy.

Exceptional wines both from Cheval des Andes winery the Terrassas de los Andes will compliment each segment of the feast. This takes place at Europea Restaurant (1227 rue de la Montagne).

Europea will also offer a five-course meal created by Hernan Griccini, renown for his Relais & Châteaux restaurant Chez Nous in Buenos Aires.

Demonstrations and classes in Argentine cuisine along with cheese concoction contests to be judged by tastings the public are also on Lumière’s plate.

Promised Land / Terre Promise by / par Gus Van Sant

A social drama that explores American values towards environmental safety versus personal financial gain versus corporate profit. 2 sales representatives of a large natural gas corporation have been dispatched to a small rural town that is now impoverished due to economic decline.
Steve Butler (Matt Damon) grew up on a farm in Iowa. The town died when the local plant owned by a major company closed. He strongly believed that he would be doing the residents of the town of McKinley Pennsylvania an enormous favour and providing them with much needed relief by offering them substantial financial rewards for the right to drill on their property (the going rate was 2 thousand dollars per acre). For Steve and his partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), it seemed like it would be a done deal – everyone signs and both can return to their families.
That is, until complications arise when at a town meeting, respected school teacher Frank Yates (Hal Holbrooke) questions the safety on the practice of 'fracking.' He demands that the proposal be voted upon. The matter is further complicated when Steve meets Alice (Rosemary De Witt) and the arrival of an ‘environmental activist’ Dustin Noble (John Krasinski).
A powerful film that superbly explores the sensitive nature of many elements extant in contemporary human societies and how one must think things through before accepting any proposal that may look good on the surface. It also shows that many of us are employed in fields that, while bringing prosperity to the community may actually be destroying it.

 

Un drame social qui explore les valeurs Américaines envers la sécurité de l'environnement par rapport aux gains financiers personnels par rapport aux bénéfices des sociétés. 2 représentants des ventes d'une société importante de gaz naturel ont été expédiés en une petite ville rurale qui est maintenant appauvri en raison du déclin économique.  

Steve Butler (Matt Damon) a grandi dans une ferme de l'Iowa. La ville est morte lors de la fermeture de l'usine locale appartenant à une grande société. Il croyait fermement qu'il ferait fait les résidents de la ville de McKinley Pennsylvanie une énorme faveur et de leur fournir un soulagement bien nécessaire   en leur offrant des avantages financiers substantiels pour le droit de forer sur leur propriété (le taux courant était de 2,000$ par acre). Pour Steve et sa compagne, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), il semblait que ce serait un fait accompli – tout le monde signe et les deux peuvent retourner à leur famille.
Ceci jusqu'à ce que des complications surgissent lorsque lors d'une réunion de la ville, l’enseignante respectée Frank Yates (Hal Holbrooke) met en doute la sécurité sur la pratique du «fracturation hydraulique». Il demande que la proposition soit soumise au vote. La question se complique d’avantage lorsque Steve rencontre Alice (Rosemary De Witt) et l'arrivée de l'activiste environnemental Dustin Noble (John Krasinski).
Un film puissant qui superbement explore la nature délicate de nombreux éléments subsistants dans les sociétés humaines contemporaines et comment il faut réfléchir avant d'accepter toute proposition qui pourrait bien paraitre à la surface. Cela montre aussi que beaucoup d'entre nous sont employés dans des domaines qui, tout en apportant de la prospérité pour la communauté, peuvent  être détruisant.

Django Unchained / Django Déchaîné by / par Quentin Tarantino

Tarantino's latest offering is a 'spaghetti western' updated for the 21st century and contains all his trademarks – excessive violence, irreverent humour and all the while expressing a powerful moralistic message.
Southern United States, 2 years before the start of the Civil War, a group of recently bought slaves are being transported, in chains, during a bitterly cold winter storm. Suddenly a Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) appears and 'requests' to purchase a particular slave. He spots Django (Jamie Foxx) and begins to 'negotiate' with those who are transporting the slaves. After said 'negotiations' have been concluded, Schultz and Django head towards the nearest town. Schultz offers to buy a drink at the local saloon. The saloon owner calls in the sheriff. Schultz shoots him down and then explains to the marshal who he really was and that there was a bounty upon him.
Schultz and Django leave town and head off to the plantation where Django had last been. He was the only one who could identify the Brittle Brothers. Schultz had promised Django that he would be a free man. Django ends up killing all 3 brothers. Impressed, Schultz gives Django his freedom and an offer to be his partner in the business of bounty hunting. Django agrees in return for Schultz’s help in finding his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).
Their search ultimately leads them to Candyland, a plantation owned by Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). To free Broomhilda they use the pretext of Django wanting to buy ‘the right Negro’ with Schultz offering to pay 12 thousand dollars. This offer grabs Candie’s attention. However when Stephen (Samuel L Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave senses that Broomhilda knows Django, his suspicions are aroused. Now in order to survive and achieve liberty and to be with Broomhilda, Django must fight off all of Candyland.

Ce dernier création de Tarantino est un «western spaghetti» mise à jour pour le XXIe siècle et contient toutes ces marques   – une violence excessive, l'humour irrévérencieux et tout en exprimant un message puissant moraliste. 

Au sud des États-Unis, deux ans avant le début de la guerre civile, un groupe d’esclaves récemment acheté  sont transportées, enchaînés, lors d'une tempête d'hiver très froid. Tout à coup un Docteur King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) apparaître et «demande» d'acheter un esclave particulier. Il aperçoit Django (Jamie Foxx) et commence à «négocier» avec ceux qui transportent les esclaves. Après que ces «négociations» sont conclus, Schultz et Django, se dirige ver la ville la plus proche. Schultz lui offre un verre dans le saloon local. Le propriétaire de saloon appelle dans le shérif. Schultz le tue et ensuite explique au maréchal qui il était réellement et qu'il y avait une prime sur lui.
Schultz et Django quittent la ville et se dirige vers la plantation où Django avait été en dernier. Il était le seul qui pourrait identifier les frères Brittle. Schultz avait promis Django qu'il serait un homme libre. Django finit par tuer tous les 3 frères. Impressionné, Schultz donne Django sa liberté et une offre d'être son partenaire dans l'industrie de la chasse de prime. Django accepte en échange  que Schultz l'aide dans la recherche pour trouver sa femme Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).
Leur quête les conduit finalement à Candyland, une plantation appartenant à Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).  Pour libérer Broomhilda, ils utilisent le prétexte que Django désire d'acheter le «bon négre» avec Schultz offrant de payer 12,000$. Cette offre saisit l'attention de Candie. Toutefois, lorsque Stephen (Samuel L Jackson), l’esclave domestique fiable de Candie, sens que Broomhilda connait Django, ses soupçons sont éveillés. Maintenant pour survivre et parvenir à la liberté et d'être avec Broomhilda, Django doit lutter contre toutes Candyland.

 

The Guilt Trip / Les Chemins de la Culpabilité by / par Anne Fletcher

Andrew Brewster (Seth Rogan), a Los Angeles based organic chemist, is preparing to go on a cross-country trip to try and sell his latest invention, an all-natural and safe cleaning fluid, called Scioclean, that is made from the oils found in coconut, palm oil and soy. Before he begins he visits his mother, Joyce (Barbara Streisand) in New York. While there, she tells him of a crush she had on a certain Andrew Margolis before she met his father while on a trip to Florida. During the night, Andrew decides to try and find this Andrew Margolis on the internet. He discovers that there is one in San Francisco and that he fits his mother’s description. The next morning, he invites his mother to accompany him on his business trip (adding San Francisco as the final stop). And so begins ‘The Mother of all Road Movies’ as the 2 travel across the United States with Andrew trying to sell his product and putting up with his mother’s constant interference.
An average comedy about 2 neurotics trying to get to know each other lacks the chemistry that would have made this work (for example Howard and his mother in Big Bang Theory). I felt that the interplay between Seth and Barbara was competitive, as if they were trying to ‘out-neurotic’ the other. There were however some moments of hilarity that did somewhat save the film from being a total loss.

 

Andrew Brewster (Seth Rogan), un chimiste organicien basé a Los Angeles, se prépare à aller sur un  voyage cross-country pour essayer de vendre sa dernière invention, un liquide de nettoyage entièrement naturel et sans danger, appelé Scioclean, qui est fabriqué à partir des huiles de noix de coco, de palme et de soja. Avant qu'il commence il rend visite à sa mère, Joyce (Barbara Streisand) à New York. C'est là qu'elle lui dit d'un coup de cœur qu'elle avait sur une certaine Andrew Margolis avant elle a rencontré son père lors d'un voyage en Floride. Au cours de la nuit, Andrew décide de retrouver cet Andrew Margolis sur l’internet. Il découvre qu'il y en a un à San Francisco et qu'il correspond à la description de sa mère. Le lendemain matin, il invite sa mère pour l'accompagner sur son voyage d'affaires (en ajoutant San Francisco comme le dernier arrêt). Ainsi commence « La mère de tous les Road Movies » comme les 2 voyages à travers des États-Unis avec Andrew essayant de vendre son produit et de supporter l'interférence constante de sa mère.

Une comédie moyenne 2 névrotiques essayant de se connaître les uns les autres n’avait pas la chimie pour que cette œuvre réussi (comme par exemple, Howard et sa mère dans Big Bang Theory). J'ai senti que l'interaction entre Seth et Barbara était compétitive, comme si un essayaient de «out-névrotique» l'autre. Il y avait cependant quelques moments d'hilarité qui a quelque peu sauvé le film d'être une perte totale.
