Mexico’s Brilliant Musician

                                                                by Nancy Snipper

Ignacio (A.K.A. Nacho or Cheto) Real Garcia is a name that flies off everyone’s tongue when speaking about Ajijic and Chapala’s greatest guitarist.  But he is also famous for playing harp and violin. As well, he sings in a way that stirs the heart. This is a passionate performer. Nacho, who is self-taught, has an eclectic repertoire but his primary focus is Ibero-Americano music, Cuban included. Nothing holds him back. He plays at just about every restaurant, club and street corner in towns that pop up along the highway from Jototopec to Chapala. Nacho is not proud or full of conceit. He will play spontaneously in buses and on sidewalks if his guitar is with him. Nacho is what Mexicans call “un buen hombre” (a good man) with a heart as big as his talent. A case in point, my dear friend Lucilla who is the resident wonder-woman who takes in strays and works hard on behalf of animal rights, started a  periodic week-end clinic to spade and neuter strays, and Nacho came to help out. Without being asked and for no money, he played his guitar and offered folk dozens of mandarins he had picked up off his backyard tree. Unlike North American musicians with their tour bus or car, Nacho has no such thing. He totes his harp and whatever he needs to play or give to others in the bus. Nacho made his own violin and often goes to the Carpentaria to repair people’s instruments. A craftsman too, to honour Canada he hand-carved a round wooden medallion with a maple leaf on one side and a bear on the other. The detail is startling. Along with these pieces of art he made tiny miniature maple leaves, each with a series of veins that required painstaking work and a keen eye. He worked off pictures, as Nacho has never traveled beyond Mexico.

His son Victor is a genius. He and his dad along with José and Hernán have a group called Melodía Acústica. They are so much in demand, there is no such thing as a weekend off for these guys. Hire them now! They earn a pittance for their performances. Victor plays over a dozen instruments including some from Asia, and composes fantastic orchestral works. He records his compositions that are melodically stunning and intricate in Nacho – his dad’s house. There happens to be a studio in the back that both built. Victor plays each instrument and separately records each musical line per instrument separately. It is arduous work, but Victor’s intensity can handle it all.
I had the pleasure to play tambourine with the group during a performance at Tony’s Restaurant in Ajijic. It was thrilling to play with them and also at Vita Bella, a stunning place up in the mountains that serves glorious food. It’s for the rich folk for sure.
As a classical pianist and banjo player with 3 CDs out, I have composed, arranged, played and sung in various venues in Canada. But the highlight for me was having a chance to join Victor and Nacho who spontaneously invited me to play that tambourine with them. I was so exhilarated.
I had the honour as well to step into Nacho’s house and spend two hours with Victor as he played his recordings for me. I was flabbergasted at this family’s musical talent.
The house has become a kind of repository for all the instruments they own, and they are the first to spend money on acquiring instruments than acquiring purchasing a dish washer or other time savers.
Meeting Nacho and Victor will long be a highlight during my trip to Ajijic. I plan to go back and play with them again – if they’ll have me.

The Best Doctor in Chapala

                                                 by Nancy Snipper

He does acupuncture, manipulations of the spine, holistic treatments, consultations and tests and readings of lab results.
In fact this doctor is so well trained and knowledgeable, I would move down to Mexico just to be treated by him. His name is Dr. José Ricardo Heredia Granados. He has trained in Beijing and North America. I didn’t even have an appointment. I walked into his “office” and he appeared from his inner office. Hand-made wooden furniture designed by him warmed me up to the place.
Dr Granados immediately welcomed me and read my lab reports ordered by another doctor who was not available to read the report.
Not only did he call the lab for further testing, but wanted me to stay one day longer in order to prescribe appropriate treatment after all tests were completed. He could do this in a few hours the next day.
We began to talk about the body and healing. At this point I asked him if he would like to listen to a song magnificently sung my Georgia. It is called “Who Wants to Live Forever.”  The late great Freddie Mercury of Queen also performed it; in fact one of his band members composed it. Thank God for You Tube.
Dr. Granados didn’t hesitate. Together we listened to it, and he commented how much he admired Freddie Mercury of Queen. This was a cool doctor who truly understood the value of a moment and to go with it. He suddenly asked me if he could do some manipulations on my back. It was killing me, and I had been suffering for several months. “There is no charge. I need to help you.”
He gently manoeuvred my body into various positions and made the comment that he does not wait until he hears a crack of the spine. He feels this is not necessary. Nonetheless, he did realign me as several ‘cracks’ came out, including those painful kinks that we all have in the neck and back.
The cost for the 2 hours I spent with him was a mere $17. He also handed my friend several tablets of cipro, a powerful antibiotic that alleviates infection. He did not charge him, and this drug is very expensive. Dr. Granados’ office is on Flavio Romeo #453 in Chapala. He is right beside the lab. Please visit him, even if you feel well. Phone: 376 765 22 33, Cell: 331 408 18 32.

The Most Creative Hairdresser in Chapala, Mexico

                                                                 by Nancy Snipper

Her name is Karla, and I discovered her by chance. I had just climbed down the mountain leading off the main street in wonderful Chapala. The view from the top gave me a 360- degree vista of Chapala’s stunning enormous lake that is the focal point of this city in Jalisco province.
Estetica Karla’s is just on the main street that ascends up to the base of the mountain.
She and her daughter have been working together and their combined experience offers more than 22 years of cutting, styling and colouring hair.
I walked in and told Karla to give me something funky, fun and lively.
She began mixing colours using at least three different bowls and after two hours, my dark drab hair was no longer. I was full of golden streaks, strategically placed to give me a wow effect. It was a 240-karat job as far as I was concerned. Then, Karla told me she couldn’t let me leave without applying makeup. This was on the house. Oh my God, I felt like a movie star. I must have looked like one too, for when I left; a woman on the street was staring at me. I asked her in Spanish why she was staring at me. Her reply was simple: “Eres Bella.” That made my day. I was “beautiful” according to this lovely-looking lady who was at least 20 years younger than me.
Karla was not only fun, she laughed a lot, danced to the music after my hair was done, and generally made me realize that joy resides in her ‘estetica’ ( beauty salon).
She is a beauty. So next time, you need a hair fix, a face “lift” and a smile at your lips, you just poke your head in and say: “Karla, I need you.” The cost for all of this was $25. In Canada, it would have cost close to $250.00! Just ask for Karla’s Estetica. Her address is: Lopéz Cotilla #361-A; her cell is 333-506-34-13.

A Dangerous Method / Une Méthode Dangereuse by / par David Cronenberg

This latest film by veteran Canadian-born director is a historical drama recounting the birth of modern day psychoanalysis on the eve of WW1. In August of 1904, Russian born Sabina Naftulovna Spielrein (1885-1942, played Keira Knightly) was admitted to Burghölzli Psychiatric Hospital in Zurich Switzerland. She became a patient of Dr. Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961, played by Michael Fassbender), who was the founder of Analytical Psychology. Though she was obviously very disturbed, Jung decides to treat Sabina using the method developed by his master, Dr Sigmund Freud (1856-1939 played by Vito Mortensen). He would just talk to her. He would sit behind her and advised her not to turn around. As he learns more about her and the cause of her disturbance, he becomes increasingly spell-bound and attracted by her sexuality.
In 1906, Jung travels to Vienna to meet Freud. At first they have a lot to say to each other but Jung’s attraction to Sabina causes him to question Freud’s restrictive approach. Two factors sever the relationship entirely: rumors of Jung being involved with Sabina and Freud’s refusal to discuss a dream. Jung feels that Freud is too obsessed with sex and Freud feels Jung is making a mistaking by exploring the metaphysical aspect.
Sabina Naftulovna Spielrein meets Freud and has a collegial relationship with him. She studies medicine and becomes one of the first female psychoanalysts.
This film is destined to become a classic due to its compelling and intelligently tight script that is buoyed by powerful and credible performances by an excellent cast.

Walt Disney's Tangled and Tangled Ever After

Tangled (2010), 100m, directed by / réalisé par Nathan Greno and Byron Howard

This is a delightful retelling of the classic fairy tale about a young woman with long golden magical hair being held captive in a tower by an enchantress. It clearly shows that Walt Disney Studios are still the undisputed masters of animation and bringing magic to families since 1939. The 3D cinematography brings the characters to life and takes the audience into the luscious forested location.
Humorous moments abound; the various interplay between the characters: Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder (the charming thief), Maximus (horse), Pascal (chameleon), Mother Gothel and the rough/tough patrons at the pub (who are actually sweet and sensitive). The musical numbers reminded us of the Walt Disney classics of yesteryear.

Tangled Ever After (2012), 6m, directed by / réalisé par Nathan Greno and Byron Howard

This short picks up where the feature film concludes. The kingdom is abuzz with the upcoming wedding between Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. Maximus and Pascal are responsible for carrying the wedding rings. Comical chaos results as the pair lose the rings and they frantically attempt to retrieve them.
