Don Taco Tequila

I think this place is the “don” of tacos. It turns an ordinary taco into an exquisite taste delight. Eight phenomenal carefully flavoured tacos, along with other goodies are on the menu. I chose the Mexica and then the Don Taco Tequila.
The Mexica consisted of a thin non-greasy taco of cactus, arachera and a savoury pico de gallo of tomato, cilantro and onion. The cheese one was a delectable cheese canopy soaked in tequila covering a mix of tomato, tequila and Jalapeno chili sent me into Don Taco Tequila heaven.




Before the arrival of my two tacos, I was brought four different types of salsa; the variety is such a fun surprise. But one warning – if you are not a spice girl or boy –stay away from the Habanero sauce. 
 Andres Rubiera Lacarieri, my darling waiter is second in command at the restaurant.

His recommendations were spot on. He suggested I try their special Clamcheve drink. It is a mixture of clamato, Magi (salsa Inglesa) and a secret ingredient.  My margarita was magnificent. Yes, there is a cool bar at the entrance too.
I suggest you step inside this rustically chic place, and discover your own taco favourite.

Bar Kapra the Squirrel Hunter 2016

This absurdist allegorical comedy centers on three individuals whose only skill is squirrel hunting.
Bar Kapra hunts them, Bat Kapra puts the corpses in the bags and Trout (who has synesthesia – a condition where one associates color with sound and vice-versa) disposes of them. 






Bar, dreading the day when there will be no more squirrels, decides that he will let the odd squirrel survive so that he will always have a job. Bat Kapra suspects that Bar is compromising his job. During the dispute Bar shoots her and thinks she is dead. Trout finds her, and nurses her to health. Bat wants vengeance and forces Trout to promise not to reveal that she survived. What follows is a hilarious tale of loyalty, forgiveness and integrity. 


The set design by Patrice Charbonneau Brunelle put the audience smack-dab in the middle of the action. It felt like the leaves on the trees observing the interplay between the three. The performances were superb with near-perfect chemistry between them. A show that is not to be missed if it passes through your town.
 



Cette comédie allégorique absurdiste se concentre sur trois individus dont leur seule compétence est la chasse d'écureuil.
Bar Kapra les chasse, Bat Kapra met les cadavres dans les sacs et Trout (qui a synesthésie – un état où l'on associe la couleur avec le son et vice-versa) les dispose. Bar, redoutant le jour où il n'y aura plus d'écureuils, décide qu'il laissera certains écureuils de survivre afin qu'il aura toujours un emploi. Bat Kapra soupçonne que Bar compromet son travail. Pendant le conflit, Bar tire un coup de feu sur elle et pense qu'elle est morte. Trout la trouve, et la soigne à la santé. Bat veut la vengeance et forces Trout à promettre de ne pas révéler qu'elle a survécu. Ce qui suit est une histoire hilarante de la loyauté, du pardon et de l'intégrité.



La scénographie de Patrice Charbonneau Brunelle a mis le public en plein milieu de l'action. Cela avait l'impression d’êtres les feuilles sur les arbres qui observaient l'interaction entre les trois. Les performances étaient superbes avec une chimie quasi-parfaite entre eux. Un spectacle qui est à ne pas manquer si ceci passe à travers votre ville.

Rincon De Don Tomás

Right in the heart of Centro’s Jardin, is a gem of a restaurant that was opened by Alicia Regalado, a native of Hidalgo State, and her brother, Don Tomás. That was in 1997. 


Sadly, she passed away in 2008, but her recipes didn’t. They passed on – to her son, David Regalado who now owns Rincon de Don Tomás.
The cozy restaurant and bar is housed inside a century-old building. Warmed by wooden beams and huge doors with a humungous keyhole, Rincon de Don Tomás is catch-all place for the hungry who wish to feast indoors or outside on first-class traditional fare. Dishes are richly flavoured in herbs and special chilis that come from Hidalgo State. They can’t be found in San Miguel de Allende; nor can its famous chilaquiles con nata – notable for its red sauce oozing old fashioned cream.  A remarkable breakfast dish for sure!
But I came for dinner. The menu perfectly reflects the enduring soul of the family, for the offerings are timelessly satisfying to the palette, pleasing in choice and delectable in variety.

Aside from some lovely starters, there are five soups, seven fowl and beef platters   four fish fillet choices, shrimp favourites and eight Mexican specialties.
The soup I chose was green squash soup, and it was so savory with its potpourri of little veggies and herbs in a buttery tasting broth.  Cream topped it. Two people could have shared it, that’s how big the serving bowl was.
  Next up were the chicken enchiladas I ordered in a smooth subtly spicy green sauce. Can you believe it, but the tortillas are made at the restaurant, and they are used in enchiladas. Light in texture and flavor, my enchiladas cocooned tender chicken. The portion was huge, and it included astounding serving a salad brimming   with avocado slices tomatoes and onions. Rice with its assortment of tiny veggies hidden inside it turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. What a great meal!
I had the heavenly demure cheese cake that surely was a gift from the gourmet gods. I had the hot chocolate with nuts brownie cake. Joy!
Their coffee is from Italy. The cappuccino I ordered was a potion from the gods. Heavenly! Have fun choosing from 12 different styles of coffee prepared for you right on the spot.

 
Your visit to San Miguel must include Rincon de Don Tomás. It is tops, and priced far below its value.
