A monthly chronicle of films (features, medium or shorts) seen throughout the current month from any source. Commentaries will be limited to 99 words or less. Film festivals will be hyperlinked. If time permits certain films will be elaborated on and be posted under the label “Film Box Office” (100-399 words) or “Film Review” (400 or more) (number of words based on English only). 

Une chronique mensuelle de films (long-, moyen- ou court-métrages) vu tout au long du mois en cours de n'importe quelle source. Les commentaires sera limitée à 99 mots ou moins. The Death (and Life) of Carl Naardlinger, Canada 2016, 92m, Katherine Schlemmer

Mild-mannered Carl Naardlinger lives a relatively mundane life in Toronto with his real-estate agent wife Pam. Carl is the one you call if you have a problem with your computer. Just as he is about to partake of the birthday cake Pam bought for him from the neighborhood bakery, there is a knock at the door. It is Detective Renton from Missing Persons investigating the disappearance of a “Carl Naardlinger.” Due to bearing the same name, Carl feels that there is a connection between them. He becomes personally involved in the search for the missing Naardlinger. Awkwardly humorous drama.

Carl Naardlinger, à la douceur de vivre, mène une vie relativement banale à Toronto avec sa femme Pam, une agent immobilier,. Carl est celui que vous appelez si vous avez un problème avec votre ordinateur. Juste au moment où il s'apprête à prendre le gâteau d'anniversaire que Pam lui a acheté à la boulangerie du quartier, on frappe à la porte. C'est l'inspecteur Renton des personnes disparues qui enquête sur la disparition d'un «Carl Naardlinger». En raison du fait qu'il porte le même nom, Carl estime qu'il existe un lien entre eux. Il s’impliqué personnellement dans la recherche du Naardlinger disparu. Drame humoristique maladroit.

Mary Shelley (1797-1851) is best known as the author of the Gothic novel Frankenstein. This biographical drama follows her relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). This relationship inspired her to write Frankenstein. The novel is essentially an account of her struggle to find her own voice. Due to all the constraints of societal pressures imposed upon women at the time, it was very difficult for Mary Shelley.

The film’s stellar cast gave stunning performances worthy of Masterpiece Theater. Al-Mansour took several liberties with the actual events and their timeline.

Mary Shelley (1797-1851) est surtout connue pour être l'auteur du roman gothique Frankenstein. Ce drame biographique suit ses relations avec le poète Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). Cette relation l'a inspirée à écrire Frankenstein. Le roman est essentiellement un récit de sa lutte pour trouver sa propre voix. En raison de toutes les contraintes des pressions sociales exercées sur les femmes à l’époque, cela a été très difficile pour Mary Shelley.
La superbe distribution du film a donné des performances époustouflantes dignes du Masterpiece Theatre. Al-Mansour a pris plusieurs libertés avec les événements actuels et leur chronologie.

Thomas Carbou has just recently released two new albums: 

   “Ici et Ailleurs”

and

      II.            “Re-Cycling”

The first is a 10-track tribute to loved ones recently lost.

The latter is a reimagining of:

a) popular songs by iconic bands from the 90s,

and,

b) previous compositions originally done in trio format rearranged for solo 8-string guitar.

Thomas Carbou vient de sortir deux nouveaux albums:

I. « Ici et Ailleurs »
et
 II. « Re-Cycling »
Le premier est un hommage de 10 titres à des êtres chers récemment perdus.
Le dernier est une réinvention de:
a) des chansons populaires de groupes emblématiques des années 90,
et,
b) compositions antérieures à l'origine composées au format trio réarrangé pour guitare solo à 8 cordes.

This spectacular concert included tracks from both albums. Multi-layered ambient guitar sounds accompanied by polyphonic vocals give new life to hits from iconic bands from the 90s such as Nirvana, Cranberries and Daft Punk. From the very first track, I noticed that Carbou’s music has a strong African influence. The reason for this was revealed in a later track that featured family film footage shot by his grandfather in the 60s.

Though mainly instrumental, Carbou sung on a few tracks. His voice was engaging and well intoned. This could qualify him as a Parisian crooner; very pleasant – many in the audience (including myself) would've loved to hear more of his singing. Maybe in a multi-night series with different settings and formats.

The second set included two poignant and emotionally powerful tributes to Martin Luther King — “Selma” (a new song) and “The King is Dead.” The latter concluded the show. Both songs included iconic speeches from both MLK and his contemporaries.

Ce concert spectaculaire comprenait des pièces provenant des deux albums. Des sons de guitare ambiante multicouches accompagnés de voix polyphoniques donnent une nouvelle vie aux grands succès  des groupes emblématiques des années 90 tels que Nirvana, Cranberries et Daft Punk. Dès la première pièce, j’ai remarqué que la musique de Carbou avait une forte influence Africaine. La raison de cela a été révélée dans une pièce ultérieure qui présentait des séquences de film de famille tournées par son grand-père dans les années 60.

Bien que principalement instrumental, Carbou a chanté sur quelques morceaux. Sa voix était engageante et bien entonnée. Cela pourrait le qualifier de crooner Parisien; très agréable — beaucoup dans le public (y compris moi-même) auraient aimé entendre plus de son chant. Peut-être dans une série de plusieurs nuits avec différents paramètres et formats.
Le deuxième set comprenait deux hommages poignants et émotionnellement puissants à Martin Luther King — «Selma» (une nouvelle chanson) et «The King is Dead». Ce dernier a conclu le spectacle. Les deux chansons comprenaient des discours emblématiques de MLK et de ses contemporains.

Van Gogh Trauernder alter Mann

An esoteric biopic spanning the final four years of Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), who is considered to be among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

 It is based on the following:

§  The artist’s personal letters to his brother Theo, fellow painter Paul Gauguin and others.

§  Common agreements regarding events in the artist’s life. This includes facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented.

In the filmmaker’s own words:

^·          “This is a film about painting and a painter and their relationship to infinity. It is told by a painter. It contains what I felt were essential moments in his life; this is not the official history – it’s my version. One that I hope could make you closer to him.” Wikepedia

As for this critic, Schnabel has succeeded – I do feel that I now know a lot more about van Gogh than before and have a greater appreciation of his paintings. Willem Dafoe gives a stunning and award-winning performance in the role of van Gogh.

Il est basé sur les points suivants:
§ Les lettres personnelles de l’artiste à son frère Theo, au peintre Paul Gauguin et à d’autres.
§ Accords communs concernant les événements de la vie de l’artiste. Cela inclut les faits, les rumeurs et les moments inventés.

Dans les propres mots du cinéaste:
• «C'est un film sur la peinture et sur un peintre et leur relation à l'infini. Il est raconté par un peintre. Il contient ce que j'ai ressenti comme des moments essentiels de sa vie. ce n’est pas l’histoire officielle, c’est ma version. J'espère que cela pourrait vous rapprocher de lui. » Wikepedia

En ce qui concerne cette critique, Schnabel a réussi – je sens maintenant que j'en connais beaucoup plus sur van Gogh qu'auparavant et que j'apprécie davantage ses peintures. Willem Dafoe donne une performance superbe et primé dans le rôle de van Gogh.
