Joker a été fondée en 2012 par Joane Hétu pour explorer les qualités de textures vocales selon le timbre, des paysages sonores, des motifs rythmiques, la poésie phonétique et les sons non musicaux (souffle, babillage, langages inventés et des sons de la bouche). 12 voix a cappella Jean Derome, Gabriel Dharmoo, Géraldine Eguiluz, Lori Freedman, Kathy Kennedy, Diane Labrosse, Elizabeth Lima, Alexandre St-Onge, Ida Toninato, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Marie-Neige Besner -plus Michel F. Côté (narration, sons ambiants), portent le public dans un pays des rêves. Ce morceau a été composé en utilisant les notations graphiques qui servent principalement comme signe poste laissant ainsi un espace considérable pour des moments aléatoires et improvisés. Ce genre de musique peut être incroyablement captivant et inoubliable pour ceux avec des esprits ouverts qui cherchent de l'aventure et le non conventionnelle.
Joker was founded in 2012 by Joane Hêtu to explore the qualities of vocal textures of timbre, sound landscapes, rhythmic motifs, phonetic poetry and non-musical sounds (breathing, babbling, invented languages and mouth sounds). 12 a cappella voices – Jean Derome, Gabriel Dharmoo, Géraldine Eguiluz, Lori Freedman, Kathy Kennedy, Diane Labrosse, Elizabeth Lima, Alexandre St-Onge, Ida Toninato, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Marie-Neige Besner –plus Michel F. Coté (narration, ambient sounds), carry the audience into a land of dreams. This piece was composed using graphic notations which serve mainly as sign post thus leaving considerable space for aleatoric and improvised moments. This genre of music can be incredibly captivating and unforgettable for those with open spirits who seek the adventurous and unconventional.

Montreal Meetup – Contra dancing Craze















Contra Dancing Creates Community Joy Instantly

I did it once in a real barn in West Virginia, and I promised myself, to search for place in Montreal to do it again: Contra dancing is so much fun, and within minutes, you can move into the community spirit as your feet are moving away and your arms are reaching out to partners – yours and others who make up the contra dancing crowd. I found my contra swing at the ContraMontreal meetup. Organized by the eloquent and humorous leader, Sean McCatcheon – an expert in this genre of dancing, Sean revealed he cares about music and dancing, and loves contra as it totally and instantly connects people. He revealed it’s magical, and it was right, as I found out.
He explained that in Elizabethan times, country folk danced in a circular formation often in the fields outside, but as the gentry took it upon themselves to create a linear formation inside the endlessly long halls of noble great mansions where they danced contra. They in fact corrupted the word, “country” dancing” into “contra” dancing. It is incredibly popular in New England, and its aficionados have certainly made their voices and feet heard here in North America.
I went to the Ukrainian Hall at 6:30 pm; only a few dancers had arrived, but as the evening went on, numbers grew and before I knew it two lines formed – each numbering about 24 in each to join an eager group of fellow/female contradancers – none of whom I knew, but no matter; everyone was smiling and within minutes we were following the instructions – patiently shown to us by expert caller, Martha Cooper who – when we were ready to roll, brought on contra’s own “bells and whistles” live action sounds via Nova, a super musical ensemble. Their traditional jig-like reels and rhythmic beats enlivened our own contra gait, and with Martha calling out the moves by their names: dosey doe, promenade, balance, star, chain and more. The instruments were accordion, fiddle and guitar. What energy! I found out that an entire group of Ottawa had driven in to hear Martha and dance to her calling and Nova’s remarkable playing.
Those who religiously come to dance have been doing it for many years, so I met newcomers and old-timers alike. We all swung each other around, joined hands, and best of all kept on smiling and laughing the entire evening. This is contra dancing’s gift for all: making friends keeping in shape and feeling a part of a great community of unpretentious folk. So you think you can dance? He Bû Tune Bû  / Once Upon a Time, Turkey / Turquie 2014, 81m, Kazim Öz

An intimate look at the plight of seasonal workers in Turkey, as filmmaker observes and films one large and poor Kurdish family, travel from their hometown of Batman to toil in the lettuce fields in the vicinity of Ankara. All who are able to (even the children) do backbreaking labor in the field with no benefits, receiving very low wages and work under slave-like conditions.  
  
Un regard intime sur la situation des travailleurs saisonniers en Turquie, comme le cinéaste observe et films d'une famille nombreuse et pauvre d’origine Kurde, voyageant de leur ville natale de Batman à peiner dans les champs de laitue dans les environs d'Ankara. Tous ceux qui sont en mesure de (même les enfants) font travail éreintant dans le domaine sans qui reçoivent des prestations de très bas salaires et le travail dans des conditions esclavagistes.

 This dazzling original film  skillfully and ingeniously combines animated sequences with archival footage.    Filmmaker Claude Jutra  (1930-1986) comes back to life and talks about filmmaker Claude Jutra. Clips from Jutra‘s movies, testimonials and interviews reinterpret key moments of his life and carreer in a nuanced and impressionistic fashion.
Ce film original éblouissant habilement et ingénieusement combine des séquences animées avec des images d'archives. Le cinéaste Claude Jutra (1930-1986) revient à la vie et parle du cinéaste Claude Jutra. Des extraits de ses films, des témoignages et de ses entrevues réinterprètent les moments clés de sa vie et son carrière d'une manière nuancée et impressionniste.

Brandy Burre is best known for her recurring role as Theresa D’Agostino on the HBO series "The Wire“; playing the part in seasons 3 and 4. Afterward, she and her partner decided to move to a suburban home in Beacon, New York to start a family. For years, she tried to be a perfect suburban 'housewife‘ – looked after her children, cooked meals and dutifully waited for her partner to come home – putting on a veneer of normalcy. This 'veneer‘ soon evaporates revealing that she cannot stop being an actress.  Attempting to relaunch her career, her life implodes ... 

Brandy Burre est surtout connu pour son rôle récurrent de Theresa D'Agostino sur la série de HBO « The Wire »;  jouant le rôle dans les saisons 3 et 4. Par la suite, elle et son partenaire a décidé de déménager  à une maison de banlieue à Beacon, New York afin de fonder une famille. Pendant des années, elle a essayé d'être une «femme de foyer» de banlieue parfait pris en charge ses enfants, gérer les repas et consciencieusement attendu son partenaire rentre à la maison – mettant  un vernis de normalité. Cette «vernis» s’évapore rapidement révélant qu'elle ne peut pas cesser d'être une actrice. Tentant de relancer sa carrière, sa vie s’implose ...
