The Attack / L’Attentat by / par Ziad Doueiri

Amin Jaafari (Ali Suliman) is a Palestinian surgeon who has fully assimilated into Tel Aviv society. He has a loving beautiful wife, many Jewish friends and has just been awarded a career achievement award. He is the first Arab to be so recognised in 41 years. He has a picture-perfect life having achieved what most Palestinians could only dream of. This life is shattered when a suicide bomb explodes in a restaurant killing 17 people, 11 of whom were children.  That evening he is awakened from sleep by his friend Raveed (Dvir Benedek) to come to the hospital. When he arrives, he identifies a mangled corpse as being that of his wife Sihem (Raymonde Amsellem).
The police claim that due to the state of her corpse that she is responsible for the attack. After an initial period of denial and brutal interrogation by Captain Moshe (Uri Gavreel), Amin leaves Tel Aviv to enter the Palestinian territory of Nablus in the West Bank to search of the truth. Once there, he finds himself in even greater danger. Yet he is determined to get the answers to questions he never thought he would be asking.
The film is an adaptation of Yasmina Khadra’s international bestseller of the same name and deftly shows that in any conflict we are not immune to being victimised by an act of terrorism or even perpetrating one, ourselves. Through flashbacks we see that Sihem had everything going for her. Yet what motivated her to cross the line is a concept that mystifies and horrifies.
