No-frills chic with a huge heart
by Nancy Snipper
Montreal has just opened a spanking
new Alt Hotel from the Germain family line of Alt hotels (Groupe Germain Hospitalité:
GGH). These unique hotels stretch all
across Canada – Winnipeg will open its ALT Hotel doors next year, and Ottawa’s will fling open
in 2016. Ten existing Alt Hotels already stand tall in Canada.
The Germain signature of contemporary chic is
striking in its sparseness. Devoid of ostentatious décor and clutter, this
energy-efficient, environmental-conscious hotel sports confident class while
creating a cutting edge trend. Clients and those in the know are signing up for
the ultimate Alt Hotel experience.
What
is fabulous about this particular hotel is its partnership with Déclic, a 20-year-old
charitable organization that gives young adults in crisis a second chance at
educational institutions. In fact, GGH has donated $8 thousand to Déclic and has
utilized the talents of fifteen of teenagers from Déclic along with photographers
to produce an amazing pictorial mural of iconic emblems and scenes from Montreal.
This
colourful mural that strides the wall of the lobby is made up of three walls
covered with 1,200 images of varying sizes and a screen which displays photos
shared on Instagram in real time using the hashtag #altexpo. How appropriate
that this hotel sits in the heart of Griffintown- the first to claim a prized
spot for a hotel in this historical and exciting region.
The
hotel is dark grey. Alluring lights on columns and walls enliven the interior
in soft purple and violet hues. Terraces and eight conference rooms covering
approximately 4,400 square feet blend in with the ambiance of a futuristic feel.
Rooms are really stand-outs. Each of the 18 floors is bathed in stupendous
sunlight with breathtaking views that seem to curve around each room Aluminum
panels and bricks recycled from old buildings in the neighbourhood mark the
exterior and the interior boasts a totally Quebec team of architects (MMB
Architects) designers (Lemay Michaud Architecture Design), art work (Pascale
Girardin) and furniture by Quebec
artisans. The hotel also features
a cozy gym with a vast window view and outdoor patio of 800 square feet.
You’ll
be in the heart of Montreal
and feel like a god staring down at skyscrapers, bridges, streets, parks from
all the awesome “Alt” views. The price to stay is only $149.00 per night. Visit
