  Punch up the summer / Le punch de l'été

Sundays at 2pm from May 18 (kick off includes Monday May 19^th) until September 21, 2014 – A total of 23 events. Piknic Electronic continues its partnership with popular festivals like MUTEK (June 1), Fringe (June 14), MEG (July 27), Osheaga (August 1, 2, 3) and POP Montreal (September 21); July 5 and 12: Week-ends of the World. An intoxicating mix of international and local DJs and producers to be consumed without moderation and at the listener’s own choosing, guaranteed to be a knockout.

Les Dimanches à 14h des le 18 Mai (coup d'envoi incluent Lundi 19 Mai) au 21 Septembre 2014 – Un total de 23 événements. Le Piknic Électronique continue son partenariat avec des festivals populaires comme MUTEK (1 Juin), Fringe (14 Juin), MEG (27 Juillet), Osheaga  (1, 2, 3 Août) et POP Montréal (21 Septembre); 5 et 12 Juillet : les Week-ends du Monde. Un mélange enivrant de DJs et producteurs internationaux et locaux à consommer sans modération et au choix de l'auditeur, assuré d'être un coup de grâce.

To get to Parc Jean Drapeau by Metro: take the yellow line (at Berri-UQAM); disembark at Station Jean Drapeau; also accessible by bike, car and even by boat.

1400h Slow Hands [Live] (United States / États-Unis)

Slow Hands (a.k.a. Ryan Cavanaugh) provided a funky soul mix that is danceable with a cocktail of house music spiced with fusion jazz and pop. Each piece morphed smoothly from one into the next.  I did not perceive any indication of original sounds except maybe in the backbeat. 

Slow Hands (alias de Ryan Cavanaugh) a fourni un mélange de funky soul  dansant avec un cocktail de musique house épicé avec le jazz fusion et le pop. Chaque morceau se transformait en douceur de l'un à l'autre. Je ne percevais pas aucune indication de sons originaux, sauf peut-être dans le backbeat.

16h30 Soul Clap (United States / États-Unis)

Boston based DJs Elyte and Cnyce cook up an eclectic stew with a funky groove that thrilled the jam-packed Park Jean-Drapeau for Piknic’s opening week for the 2014 summer season. Unfortunately I had to leave at 1800h as it was getting to be impossible to maneuver through the crowd. When I left the site the lineup (consisting of mainly youths) waiting to buy a ticket in order to enter the site extended to the welcome center just before the Metro station. It was the largest crowd that I had seen since I first attended PE during MEG festival in 2012.  

Les DJs Elyte et Cnyce basée a Boston, nous cuisine un ragoût éclectique avec un groove funky qui ravi le foule plein à craquer au parc Jean-Drapeau pour la semaine d'ouverture du Piknic pour la saison 2014. Malheureusement j'ai dû quitter à 1800h où elle s'apprêtait à s'avérer impossible de manœuvrer à travers la foule. Quand j'ai quitté le site  la ligne (comprenant principalement les jeunes) en attente pour acheter un billet afin d’entrer sur le site aller jusque au pavillon de bienvenu juste avant la station de métro. C'était la plus grande foule que j'avais vu depuis que j'ai tout d'abord participé à PE pour la première pendant le festival MEG en 2012.

Astropolis 20 Years / Ans

Since 1995 a feverish electronic groove has filled the City of Brest with lightening speed during the first week of July (and since 2012 in January) brings together the ultimate in techno.

Depuis 1995, un groove électro fiévreux a rempli la ville de Brest avec une vitesse fulgurante pendant la première semaine de Juillet (et depuis 2012 en Janvier) réunit l’ultime dans la techno.

14h VeroniKa & Oliver (Quebec / Québec)

‘VeroniKa and Oliver’ are Véronique Coallier and Olivier Duquette. They are based in Montréal. Smooth melodic jazzy percussive back-beat with a delicious guitar riff.

16h30 Madben (France)

DJ and producer Benjamin Leclercq, born in Northern France near the Belgian border, was revealed at Astropolis in 2012 and has since been steadily building up a solid reputation for burning up the dance floors.

DJ et producteur Benjamin Leclercq, né en Picardie, près de la frontière belge, a été dévoilé à Astropolis en 2012 et s'est depuis qu’il mise en place progressivement une réputation solide pour brûler les pistes de dance.

A.K.A Sébastien Devaud, based in Lyon, launched his career in the late 90s. I heard his sounds between 19h35 and 20h10.

Alias Sébastien Devaud basé à Lyon, a lancé sa carrière à la fin des années 90.J’ai entendus ses sons entre 19h35 et 20h10.

15h – 17h30 Sonic Crew (France)

Sonic Crew is Da’Gil, Grolex and Dralbant. This was the first time I listened to an artist creating their sounds at the more intimate and natural setting of the smaller stage. Synth and sequencer generated sounds creating images of rainwater crystals dancing though it was a clear blue sky. The heavy percussive almost Rock-like beat attained speeds that would bring us to the nearest star in just less than four minutes, figuratively. The trio has a highly original sound yet with an eclectic mix of influences such as Edgar Froese’s Tangerine Dream and Richard Pinehas’ Heldon containing elements of Kraftwerk (Metal on Metal from Trans Europe Express) and even Jean-Michel Jarre. They are sure to be an influence on future creators of techno and computer generated music.

Sonic Crew est Da'Gil, Grolex et Dralbant. C'était la première fois que j'ai écouté un artiste créant leurs sons à  cette petite scène plus intime et plus naturelle. Des sons générée par synthétiseur et séquenceur créait des images de cristaux d'eau de pluie dansante malgré  d'un ciel bleu clair. Un rythme percussive quasi heavy rock  atteint des vitesses qui nous amèneraient à l'étoile la plus proche en un peu moins de quatre minutes, au sens figuré. Le trio a un son très original mais avec un mélange d’influences éclectique telles que Tangerine Dream de Edgar Froese et Heldon de Richard Pinehas, contenant des éléments de Kraftwerk (Métal sur Métal de Trans Europe Express) et même de Jean-Michel Jarre. Ils sont sûrs d'avoir une influence sur les futurs créateurs de la techno et musique générés par ordinateur.

Before becoming a DJ, François Coulombe was the lead singer in several Quebecois bands. His created sounds consisted of crystalline bass-lines, steady percussive beats and spacey melodies. Went to Smirnoff stage at 14h50. 

Avant de devenir un DJ, François Coulombe a été le chanteur dans plusieurs groupes Québécois. Ses sons créés se composaient des lignes de basse cristallins, des beats régulier percutants et des mélodies spatiales. Je suis allé à la scène Smirnoff à 14h 50.

A performance that I would describe as “hip-hop techno rap containing many special effects such as beeps, voice samplings, rings and others, played loud under the blazing summer sun”. 

Une performance que je qualifierais comme « un hip hop techno rap contenant de nombreux effets spéciaux tels que des bips, des échantillonnages vocales, des sonneries et d’autres, joué fort sous le soleil brûlant  d'été ».

16h30 Noo-Bap (Quebec / Québec) 

At only 19 years of age Noo-Bap has been a beat maker for five years. A child of Montreal’s experimental beat scene, he creates an eclectic mix of ambient, house and trap consisting of altered funky noise with touches of Latino and Kraftwerk, early 80s disco and hip hop. 

À seulement 19 ans, Noo-Bap a été une machine à battre pendant cinq ans. Un enfant de la scène beat expérimental Montréalaise, il crée un mix éclectique au styles  ambiant, house et trap consistant de bruits funky altéré avec des touches  Latino et de Kraftwerk, et le hip hop et disco des les débuts des années 80.

18h00 Tommy Kruise (Quebec / Québec)

Producer and mixer, born and raised on a farm outside of Quebec City, pays tribute to trap while adding a modern twist. This week’s crowd was much larger than that of May 19 at the Smirnoff stage site. Began to rain just before 19h.

Producteur et batteur, née et élevée sur une ferme à l'extérieur de la ville de Québec, rend hommage au style trap tout en ajoutant une touche de modernité. La foule de cette semaine a été beaucoup plus grande que celle du 19 Mai sur le site de la scène Smirnoff. A commencé à pleuvoir juste avant 19h
