Cavos Bay Hotel

Ikarian Paradise?  Not quite

by Nancy Snipper

I’m sitting on the stunning white terrace of Cavos Bay Hotel on the island of Ikaria, spellbound by the breathtaking view before me. Entrancing as Circe herself, the hypnotic turquoise Aegean waters lovingly lap against the rocks; they are beckoning me into the great beyond where sea and sky merge in a mesmerizing palate of endless beauty.  It was my first evening at the hotel. The sunset was exquisite, as was the sunrise which I witnessed… for the wrong reason (more about that later).
This natural beauty continues on within Cavos Bay located in Armenistis village where restaurants seem to spill into the sea. A splendid array of fantastic sandy beaches - Livadi, Messakti and Nas stretch along the island’s northern side - all within the vicinity of Armenistis.
Various ascending  hiking paths cut into Ikaria’s spectacular Atheras  mountain chain (over 1,500 meters high) where pine forests, lunar landscapes of incredible formations and the island’s unique 17th-century, primitive slate houses  appear, built into covert mountain sides to escape pirate attacks. From Cavos Bay, the port of entry for one such hike is only ten minutes away. The hotel’s front desk can direct you or you can buy a map at the village supermarket.
But many vacationers just to want stay put, relax on the balcony off their rooms or dive into the swimming pool which overlooks the sea.   I was impressed by the gleaming white lobby spacious enough to sail a boat. The complex offers 65 rooms.
I had booked four days as a journalist – compliments of the hotel – the son of the owner did not ask to see my journalist credentials – though I offered; nor was I asked to show my passport. That often happens in Greece.
But all that changed the next morning.  Although my room was functionally comfy and the balcony vista inspiring,  I woke up at about 5:30 itching like crazy.  Mosquito bites they were not. I spied a suspicious looking tiny black bug moving on my bed sheet and there were lots of tiny ants on the floor.
I saw that beautiful sunset that Despina, the owner, had mentioned, but it wasn’t that I wanted to talk to her about.  I informed her that I needed to change my room, showing her my bites.    She was very kind and supported my request to wash my clothes for which I would pay (I feared the critters may have retreated into them, as they were on the other twin bed, but bagged. Despina assured me she would wash them herself, but she declined entering my room to see what was going on.
I went out for three hours, but upon my return my bag of clothes were still sitting in the hotel office.
I was then asked by the front desk receptionist in charge of rooms to produce my passport and my journalist credentials. I was told by the daughter that they were not acceptable as there was no ‘agency‘ listed. The fact she was given four freelance journalist publication press credentials for which  I write one upon which was clearly written “Media Canada”  did nothing to change her mood or mind.  Finally,  I pulled out my contract  from a rather important editor in Canada.  They weren’t interested.
What really confounded me was the previous evening  I had of my own volition volunteered to show much of my writing to Despina  who had told me that the hotel was half full.
Now suddenly I was told my room was needed and that I could take another room. Oh Joy!  But the room proved to be dismally hot and the view was non-existent.
I elected to stay in the buggy room; I would brave it for one more night. I saw Despina again, but she totally ignored me.  She sat at the bar with two guests – her back turned to me.
I am writing this not to vet, but to express my deep disappointment - not so much over the room, but the turn-coat uncaring attitude of Cavos Bay’s owners ,  save for the son who was obviously  trusting and  witty.  I never saw him again though.
As for the others, their appalling reaction did not match the hotel’s awesome setting nor the care and humanity I have always experienced - for which Greeks are renown - during the forty years I have been writing about this country.

Footnote:  I am not saying this hotel has a bug issue;  I can only speak about the room I stayed in.
But they certainly have an attitude problem.

20:00 Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker, United States / États-Unis 2013, 90m, Lily Keber (film pop)
Lily Keber’s first feature length film is a bold and well-researched exploration of the legendary (yet unfortunately overlooked) Rhythm and Blues musician James Carroll Booker III (1939-1983). Dr John described him as “the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.” The story of his troubled and tragic life filled with struggles, prejudice and isolation unfolds through the use of never-before-seen concert footage, rare personal photos and anecdotes from musicians and associates who have been touched by him.

Jason Bajada – record launch / lancement d'album; presented by / présenter par Audiogram
After recording two acclaimed albums in English (Loveshit and The Sound Your Life Makes), Montreal singer-songwriter and guitarist Jason Bajada fulfills a long-desired dream by launching his first completely Francophone album Le Résultat de mes Bêtises. A full-bodied melodic sound recalling 1970s Quebec pop icons such as Robert Charlebois and Harmonium yet updated for the 21st Century. Jason Bajada is a promising artist who can make a strong impact on both sides of the Quebec coin.

Combining contemporary dance with images and sounds of political violence and civil unrest, this harsh and difficult work addresses the lack of eye contact between people and the indifferent and insensitive attitudes that those in authority positions hold towards the people. A powerfully impacting work that is both personal and universal.

At The Church of St. John the Evangelist / Au l'église de Saint Jean l'Évangéliste
This eclectic exploration of the spiritual nature of Jazz and its connection to the soul and Divinity clearly shows that true worship is a matter of celebration and joy, not a matter of solemnity or primness.  As Jazz Amnesty Sound System (DJs Andy Williams and Sweet Daddy Luv) provided the foundation throughout, members of the Jazz Illuminati of Montreal built upon it with random solos and musical outbursts – vocally and instrumental – and Cœur Maha provided oral backdrop. Pastor Bob provided inspirational ‘preaching.’  The four-hour performance included traditional gospels and Negro spirituals to free jazz. Sacred music from around the world and from all faiths was included plus ‘poetry’ sermons (a highlight was Eric Lewis’s ‘sermon’ on the impact of John Coltrane’s Meditations on his life.

14:00 Indie Montreal's brunch at Divan Orange / Le brunch d’Indie Montreal au Divan Orange
·         Emilie and Ogden (Montreal / Montréal)
I had previously seen her in June at the Fringe when she played with her band, in the same venue, but today she was accompanied only by Ogden her harp. Her sense of ‘folksiness’ was more pronounced; her harp was lilting and melodic still blending well with her extraordinary voice.

·         Royal Canoe (Winnipeg)
A six-piece band that with their lush, polished and complex rhythms play a progressive rock that puts them in a similar vein as Genesis and Marillion but with a touch of soul and a steady funk.

Ambient and cinematic folk duo, consisting of Jonathan Peters and David Lagacé, were in complete harmony with each other, both vocally and instrumentally.

This guitar-based quintet plays a set of catchy rock 'n' roll songs, a cross-breeding of Status Quo with the Ramones.

20:00 Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show
at / au Petit Campus, presented by / presenter par Hello Darlin Productions

The Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show is one of the few remaining rock ‘n’ roll travelling shows left, playing  over 200 shows per year (all in small venues not stadiums), traveling nearly  2500 miles in old rickety buses which often break down.

Bill Poss (born in Illinois but now based in Texas/ né en Illinois, mais désormais basé en Texas) – guitar, vocals / guitare, chant
Tif Ginn (South Texas / Texas du Sud) – guitar, vocals, accordion / guitare, chant, accordéon
Fred Eaglesmith (Born / né 1957 in / en Brantford Ontario) – guitar, vocals and jokes / guitare, chant et blagues
Justine Fischer – double bass / contrebasse
Kori Heppner – drums / batterie
Matty Simpson – guitar, banjo / guitare, banjo

The show started with Bill Poss performing four ‘Kentucky Bluegrass’ songs  -- one happy, two sad and the last happy. He was followed by his wife Tif (Tiffany) Ginn who along with the band (apart from Fred) played a rollicking Texas blues.  She performed at least six. The first set lasted around 45 minutes followed by a 15 minute break.

The second part of the show was fronted by Fred Eaglesmith (an alternative country artist who has defied categorization) himself.  Interjected in between songs,  that talked mainly about rural life, Fred told jokes that had the sold-out crowd roaring with laughter.
All in all a fantastically enjoyable evening of American roots, good-time rock ‘n’ roll and plenty of humour – harkening back to the days when the music was a revolutionary force and not ‘big-business’ as it is today.

A biopic about French-Canadian strongman, Louis Cyr (1863-1912), whose exceptional exploits propelled  him from being the son a family of textile workers (who had emigrated to the United States) into legendary realms. This mythical hero set many world records in weightlifting that have, to this day, never been broken. It not only tells the story of his exploits in the sports arena but his hardest battles were outside the arena – mainly with himself. The strength of his determination and character allowed him to succeed. Accompanied by a superb supporting cast, Antoine Bertrand played Louis Cyr with perfect credibility.

2011 Funkytown, 132m

Disco music dominated the charts from the mid to late 70s and Montreal was no exception. This fictionalized account, based on real events, gives us an in depth look at Montreal`s disco scene between 1976 and 1980. On centre stage was the Starlight, the hottest club in town. With intertwining stories about some of its flamboyant patrons and management this is an ambitious portrait of a slice of Montreal`s recent history. With the right mix of comedy and human pathos, it reveals the excesses and depravities that marked the era.

Horror film, with touches of social commentary, predates the Twilight series about a romance between humans and vampires. Soon after Thierry meets Claire and becomes infatuated with her. They become a couple and are happy until Thierry meets her family. The Attack / L’Attentat by / par Ziad Doueiri

Amin Jaafari (Ali Suliman) is a Palestinian surgeon who has fully assimilated into Tel Aviv society. He has a loving beautiful wife, many Jewish friends and has just been awarded a career achievement award. He is the first Arab to be so recognised in 41 years. He has a picture-perfect life having achieved what most Palestinians could only dream of. This life is shattered when a suicide bomb explodes in a restaurant killing 17 people, 11 of whom were children.  That evening he is awakened from sleep by his friend Raveed (Dvir Benedek) to come to the hospital. When he arrives, he identifies a mangled corpse as being that of his wife Sihem (Raymonde Amsellem).
The police claim that due to the state of her corpse that she is responsible for the attack. After an initial period of denial and brutal interrogation by Captain Moshe (Uri Gavreel), Amin leaves Tel Aviv to enter the Palestinian territory of Nablus in the West Bank to search of the truth. Once there, he finds himself in even greater danger. Yet he is determined to get the answers to questions he never thought he would be asking.
The film is an adaptation of Yasmina Khadra’s international bestseller of the same name and deftly shows that in any conflict we are not immune to being victimised by an act of terrorism or even perpetrating one, ourselves. Through flashbacks we see that Sihem had everything going for her. Yet what motivated her to cross the line is a concept that mystifies and horrifies.
