In the Land of Blood and Honey / Dans la Terre de Sang et de Miel by / par Angelina Jolie

Angelina's directorial debut is set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War (1992-95). She states her intention for the movie as: "I wanted to make a film that would express, in an artistic way, my frustrations with the international community's failure to intervene in conflicts in a timely and effective manner. I also wanted to explore and understand the Bosnian War, as well as broader issues such as women in conflict, sexual violence, accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the challenge of reconciliation. It was the deadliest war in Europe since World War II, but sometimes people forget the terrible violence that happened in our time, in our generation, to our generation."
Before the war erupted, Danijel (Goran Kostić) and Ajla (Ayla) (Zana Marjanović) were a couple. Ajla is an aspiring painter who is staying with her sister, Lejla (Vanesa Glodjo). Lejla has an infant child.
Ajla and Danijel are out dancing. The night club is devastated by a bomb blast.
Four months have passed and the 'ethnic cleansing' begun by the Serbs is in full force. The home of Ajla and Lejla is raided by Serbian police. Ajla and Lejla are Bosnian Muslims. Ajla is to be taken to the camp while Lejla and her child are allowed return back into the apartment. The camp that Ajla is sent to is commanded by Danijel. The Bosnian Serb Army is commanded by Danijel's father, General Nebojsa Vukojevich (Rade Šerbedžija). Danijel must now struggle to protect Ajla from his men and maintain his loyalties to his father and to the Serbian cause. He attempts to rekindle his love, but the pressures of war create a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty. Ajla becomes distrustful. General Vukojevich questions the loyalty of his son.
In order for the project to be treated with the proper respect required, Angelina Jolie needed to ensure that the script and scenario was 100% accurate and the right voices were chosen to portray the personalities. When the casting call and auditions were held, her name was deliberately withheld from all aspects; only to be revealed when the casting was complete. She wanted actors who had lived through the war. The end result is a film that achieves Angelina Jolie’s intention quoted at the beginning of this review.

Je voulais aussi d’explorer et de comprendre la guerre en Bosnie, ainsi que des questions plus vastes comme les femmes dans les conflits, la violence sexuelle, de responsabilisation pour crimes de guerre et contre l'humanité et le défi de la réconciliation. C'est la guerre la plus meurtrière en Europe depuis la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, mais parfois les gens oublient la violence terrible qui s'est passé dans notre temps, dans notre génération, à notre génération.»

Quatre mois se sont écoulés et le « nettoyage ethnique » entrepris par les Serbes est pleinement en vigueur. La maison d’Ajla et Lejla subit une descente par la police Serbe. Ajla et Lejla sont des musulmans Bosniaques. Ajla doit aller au camp tandis que Lejla et son enfant peuvent retourne à    l'appartement. Le camp ou Ajla est envoyé est commandé par Danijel. L'armée des Serbes de Bosnie est commandée par le père de Danijel, le général Nebojsa Vukojevich (Rade Šerbedžija). Danijel doit maintenant lutter pour protéger Ajla de ses hommes et de maintenir sa loyauté à son père et à la cause Serbe. Il tente de raviver son amour, mais les pressions de la guerre créant un sentiment d'ambiguïté et d'incertitude. Ajla devient méfiant.  Le général Vukojevich remet en question la fidélité de son fils.  
Pour que le projet devait d’être traitée avec le respect nécessaire, Angelina Jolie avait besoin de s'assurer que le script et le scénario était 100 % précis, et les bonnes voix choisis pour représenter les personnalités. Lorsque l'appel de casting et auditions ont eu lieu, son nom a été délibérément retenu sur tous les aspects; seulement à être révélé lorsque le casting était achevé. Elle voulait des acteurs qui avaient vécu la guerre. Le résultat final est un film qui realise l'intention d’Angelina Jolie citée au début de ce critique.
