Shock and Awe, United States États Unis 2017, 90m, Rob Reiner

After 9/11, President George W. Bush, determined to send troops to Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein, claimed that the dictator:
·         was allied with Osama bin Laden.
·         he possessed weapons of mass destruction.
While most of the major outfits such as the New York Times, Washington Post and the major TV networks simply repeated what the Pentagon released, two reporters from Knight-Ridder – Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel – probed and investigated the veracity of the President’s claims. The first claim – an alliance between a secular Arab dictator and a radical Islamist – set off the alarm from the get go.

Path of Blood, United Kingdom / Royaume-Uni 2018, 91m, Jonathan Hacker

This powerful film was sourced from several hundred hours of raw footage (tapes shot by Al Qaeda’s own foot soldiers and rare CSI footage shot by police). The result is a shocking and disturbing documentation of Al Qaeda’s daring but ultimately suicidal attempt to overthrow the House of Saud in Saudi Arabia. It began on 12 May 2003, when bombs went off at three compounds in Riyadh—Dorrat Al Jadawel, Al Hamra Oasis Village, and the Vinnell Corporation. The war that followed was long, hard and bloody; each attack by Al Qaeda being more brutal than the previous one.

Always at The Carlyle, United States / États-Unis 2018, 92m, Matthew Miele

The Carlyle Hotel, a combination luxury and residential hotel located on the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 76th Street, on the Upper East Side of New York City, opened in 1930. The film begins by relating a brief summary of its history, including a nearly exhaustive list of celebrities that have stayed there. For 87 years, what was done or spoken remained within its walls – both its guests and staff took a discretionary vow of confidentiality. With this amusing film, Miele tests this vow by trying every trick in the book as he interviews guests and staff.
