The High Cost of Living / Le Prix à Payer by / par Deborah Chow

The lives of four individuals begin to unravel after a hit-and-run: Henry (Zach Braff), Nathalie (Isabelle Blais), Michel (Patrick Labbe) and Johnny (Julian Lo). Henry is a New Yorker by birth, lives his life with reckless abandon. He lives in a rundown Chinatown apartment and he sells drugs on the side. Nathalie is eight months pregnant and believes that the child will save her marriage and that she and her husband will live a life that is comfortable and secure. Michel, Nathalie’s husband, is so self-absorbed and obsessive about his career that he neglects his wife’s emotional needs. Johnny is 16 years-old and lives with his immigrant parents who own Henry’s apartment.
On a cold winter night Henry has been out wheeling, dealing and drinking. On his way home he turns the wrong way on a one-way street. Nathalie has just stepped out off the curb onto the street to wait for a taxi to bring her to the hospital. She fears that something is wrong with her baby. Nathalie awakes in the hospital and is told that her baby is dead but she still needs to carry it until it is considered safe enough to deliver it.
Henry, unable to bear the burden of his hit-and-run, sends Johnny out to try and find out whether the woman he hit, has survived and where she lives.
Over the following week Nathalie struggles to come to terms with her loss. Michel is so preoccupied that he lacks the emotional tools to give the support she needs. When Henry enters her life, unaware of what he had done, Nathalie finds an unlikely refuge. But Henry is realising that the truth is not easy to contain. The police are questioning Johnny about the hit-and-run. Ultimately Henry and Nathalie will have to face the true cost of living. This is a fate that we all go through in our lives. As such the message of this film is universal.
This is Deborah Chow’s first feature film
