“Paraiso”, Hector Galvez’s first feature film, is a ‘slice of life’ socio-realist drama about the daily activities amongst a group of five Peruvian teenagers (Joaquin, Antuanet, Sara, Lalo et Mario) who spend their entire day looking for something to do in their home town of Jardines Del Paraiso a slum on the outskirts of Lima. They live aimlessly with few options for their futures. One wants to go into the army, another wants to join a travelling circus, Sara wants to go to college and the last wants to avenge the murder of their friend.
The harsh reality depicted in this film, is driven home by the opening shot of a twisted tree in the midst of an arid terrain. Though this tree has been constantly assaulted with its cruel and difficult surroundings, it remains standing exuding a sense of nobility. The same holds true for the principle characters, all of whom are non-professional actors
«Paraiso», le premier long métrage d’Hector Galvez, est un drame « tranche de vie » socio-réaliste sur les activités quotidiennes parmi un groupe de cinq adolescents Péruviennes (Joaquin, Antuanet, Sara, Lalo et Mario) qui passe leur journée entière à la recherche de quelque chose à faire dans leur ville natale, Jardines Del Paraiso, un bidonville à la périphérie de Lima. Ils vivent sans but avec peu d'options pour leur avenir. Parmi eux, un veut entrer dans l'armée, un autre veut rejoindre un cirque itinérant, Sara veut aller au Collège et le dernier veut se venger de l'assassinat de leur ami.
La dure réalité est accentue des l'ouverture du film avec une image d'un arbre tordu au milieu d'un terrain aride. Bien qu'agressé constamment avec la rigueur de ses environs, l'arbre reste debout et dégage un sentiment de noblesse. Il en va de même pour les personnages principaux, qui sont tous des acteurs non professionnels.
