The string trio Cordâme is led by double bassist and composer Jean Félix Mailloux (centre on photo) with Marie Neige Lavigne (left on photo) on violin and Julie-Odile Gauthier-Morin (right on photo) on cello.Augmenting the group to a quartet for this performance was percussionist and drummer Pierre Tanguay. Cordâme, founded by Jean Félix Mailloux in 2004, is chamber music created through extensive research into modal and improvised music from Persian, Armenian and Indian sources. The result takes the listener into the imaginative universe of composer Jean Félix Mailloux as the ensemble explores texture, timbre and sound. With compositions that evoke rich imagery, Mailloux’s music straddles the common space between folklore, classical and jazz; between composition and improvisation; and between tradition and contemporary. Pierre Tanguay's performance proved once again that he is among the most versatile and accomplished drummers on the scene today.

Han Miija (Jeong-hie Yun) is an elegant 66-year-old woman who lives in the South Korean province of Gyonggi in a small suburban city along the Han River, with her college level grandson. He is aloof and rejects her attention. He bosses her around. Her sole source of income is a small government welfare cheque that is augmented by taking care of an elderly man who had suffered a stroke. The film opens with a group of young children playing near the river bank. They notice a body floating in the river. It is later identified as that of a young college girl who had jumped off the bridge. Han is in the doctor’s office, complaining of numbness in her arms and mentions that she often forgets names. The doctor says he is not concerned about the numbness but that he wants to look into her forgetfulness. When she leaves the hospital, she notices the paramedics bringing the young girl in. Just as she nears her house, she spots an ad posting for classes in how to write poetry. Though the registration for the class is closed, she is able to persuade the instructor to let her into the class. Meanwhile her doctor tells her that she has Alzheimer’s and she is advised that her grandson (along with five other boys) is involved in the gang rape of the young college girl who has been identified as Agnes. Her mother has not yet filed charges against the boys and the fathers of the other five want Han to join them in preventing this from happening. The fathers want to keep their boys’ futures intact. In comparison to Bong Joon-Ho's “Mother “, this is a quiet lyrical drama about an aging woman trying to retain her inquisitive youthful spirit in the face of the harsh realities of life.
This enduring adaptation of Sholem Aleichem (1859-1916) classic play is about a pious Jewish Ukrainian milkman, Tevye, who is forced to deal with his daughter Khave’s marriage to Fedye, a Ukrainian peasant. As Fedye was not Jewish, this caused a serious moral and ethical conflict as Tevye struggled in reconciling his paternal love for his daughter with his deep-seated convictions. As well the family faces expulsion from their land due to the anti-Semitic pressures of the times. Tevye’s only anchor is his other daughter Tzeitel who along with her two young children, Shloimele and Perele, has come back to stay. This work holds the honour of being the first Non-English film to be deemed as ‘culturally significant’ by the United States Library of Congress and is preserved in the National Film Registry. Its restoration and the release on DVD were done with thoroughness and great care. It was definitely a highlight of the recent second edition of the Montreal International Yiddish Theatre Festival (June 13-22 2011). *See links below.
It was shot on a potato field near Jericho Long Island. Due to Hitler’s imminent invasion of Poland, the Polish actors were unable to return and thus survived the war.
It formed the basis for the 1964 musical and the 1971 film adaptation “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Behold Greeks Bearing Gifts
By Nancy Snipper
Now in its third year, the Montreal Greek Film Festival is a treat where film, food and fantastic surprises are formidably featured within a week that you just don’t want to end. The warmth of Avra Georgiou, festival organizer was contagious; the atmosphere electric. That’s what happens when Greeks come together to celebrate their artistic acumen. Indeed, the famous hospitality of the enormous Greek community certainly comes to life with this wondrous event. With outstretched arms the festival welcomes all people no matter what side of the Mediterranean or Atlantic your ancestry hails from. Simply put, it is a festival whose offerings are unforgettable.
This year, 10 films were presented to the public, all screened, except for the closing film called ‘My Sweet Canary’, in Cinéma du Parc. Most of the movies addressed pivotal points in Greek history and culture including three documentaries: My Sweet Canary, Earthquake and Log Books – George Seferis. But what Greek occasion could be satisfying without including its exquisite dishes. Sweetening the whole affair was the outstanding Greek cuisine catered by Pilaros. I have never tasted such authentic, deliciously classic Greek food outside of the great country itself. Attendees of the closing night were given a mini bottle of Solon Greek extra virgin olive oil, compliments of Pilaros.
Nitza, the superb singer/composer whose songs and mesmerizing have become the sonorous trademark for Cirque de Soleil’s production, Delirium. Nitza is stunning to behold and truly a wonder to listen to.
This year (2011) Greece has endured tempestuous times raging with an economy on the verge of a euro breakdown, and citizens losing their money and minds over the whole fiasco. Underscoring the enormous problem is the total disharmony of the government and the people. The problems are plenty and they date back to previous years. Not paying taxes throughout the past decade has culminated in a spectacular calamity not just for the country, but for all of us living in the free world. The movie ‘Welcome to All Saints’ insidiously reflects the collective corruption and dismal mood of workers in a hospital. From doctors all the way to janitors, almost everyone is in it for the money. A handout under the table will get you up on the list for an operation and maybe more. At the center of the films is a young intern thrust into this situation that totally subverts the Hippocratic oath and his won reason for becoming a doctor. The one place that is supposed to be a sanctity for saving lives is anything but. Of course, the movie is a black comedy, but we all know that there is so much truth to this insanity and it pervades hospitals not just in Greece. Greed and a total lack of empathy create chaotic doom. The director has made a feature that can be confusing, but this may intentional in order to vividly capture the total lack of coordination, cohesion, conscience and competency that happen in hospitals full of saints and devils.
West-African born and raised in Scotland, artist Annabel Page produces a stunningly unique visual experience through her mosaics. I recently was enthralled when I had the opportunity to view the video depicting the making of her latest work using coloured stained glass and mother-of-pearl called “The White Feather”. As well in some of her works she uses carefully hand-cut coloured gemstones to produce works that are alive. I felt the need to share this experience with others so I have posted the video on my blog. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks Annabel for allowing me to share your works.

Without legal papers, these migrants had fled their country of origin in the hope of a better life in England. Beginning in July 2007 and continuing until November 2010, the filmmaker had filmed the living conditions and recorded their hopes, dreams and concerns.
