Amor y Frijoles / Love and Beans / Amour et les Haricots por / by / par Mathew Kodath, Hernán Pereira

Honduras gained its independence from Spain in 1821, yet in all of its history this is only its fifth feature film in all of its history. For more details see: http://www.filmbirth.com/honduras.html
When I noticed the above mentioned detail in the 2011 Festivalissimo catalogue and that there was only one screening, I thought to myself that this was definitely “A Must-See.” So on Saturday May 28th, I mustered up all of the energy I could to be at the screening venue on time for its 1pm screening.
Prior to the screening, I briefly spoke to the founder and director of the festival, Elisa Pierra. My heart sank a bit, when she said that the copy received had no subtitles. Well, I have previously seen a Polish film (back in 2003) with no subtitles and did understand the gist of it. And I figured my current knowledge of Spanish would allow me an even greater understanding of this one. Alas such was not the case.
After the screening, I spoke again to the director, who was also was accompanied by a representative of the Honduran Consulate. I made a suggestion that in a future edition there be a retrospective of Honduran Cinema and screen every film released in its history. Both tended to agree that it would be worthwhile.
What I did pick up from the film was that it did seem to be a delightful comedy about sexual politics and the dangers of jealousy.
