Precious Life / Vie Précieuse by / par Shlomi Eidar

The opening film for the 7th edition of Israel Film Festival (May 14 – 23 2011) is an emotionally stirring documentary about a Palestinian family from the Gaza Strip fighting to save the life of their four-month-old infant son, Mohammad Abu Mustafa, who is dying from a hereditary disease. To save his life he requires a bone marrow transplant. Due to the Gaza Strip lacking the facilities to perform this procedure, the baby along with his mother, Raida, are brought to Tel-Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv. Dr Raz Somech is in a race against time to find a compatible donor.
Shlomi Eidar is a prominent Israeli journalist and war correspondent and has covered the Gaza strip for nearly 20 years. This is his first feature film. The film is a strong appeal for peace as all of the protagonists – Raida, Dr Somech and Shlomi Eidar -- need to put aside their biases and differences in order to save the life of Mohammad. This gives a human dimension to the embargos and extreme restrictions on the movements into and out of the Gaza Strip, which Israel imposed in 2006 and exacerbated by the flare-ups between Israeli Defence Forces and Hamas.
