Beginning slowly, making gestures with her body to an ambient soundscape by Bulgarian composer Emilian Gatsov, Sabine Molinaar instantly draws the audience into her dream-world as she convincingly contorts into her various forms and shapes. We are engaged, on the edge of our seats and astounded at her ability to manipulate our imagination in believing what we actually see, a true feat of magic.

This latest solo dance performance is a parody of American Urban Culture. Winnin’ is a slang term often used in Rap and Hip-hop to signify sufficiency and a feeling of superiority with regard to others. My impression of this piece was mixed. There were some enjoyable and entertaining moments but others that I hoped would quickly pass. I.E. some parts worked, others did not. Dany is definitely a good dancer – take note of his moves to a motivational speech about making the decision to be a winner – he finds the rhythm and moves accordingly. The theatrics were somewhat kitsch.

Disparaître Ici Du 31 Mars - 4 Avril /  March 31 to April 4 2015

Mise-en-scène par / Directed by : Jocelyn Pelletier + Édith Patenaude
Théâtre multidisciplinaire de Québec / Multidisciplinary theatre from Quebec
This loosely based adaptation of the works of American author Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) centers on a group of friends in the 30s, trying to find meaning in their empty lives by partying, drinking, getting high and having sex. Then rumors of disappearances, strange encounters, films arriving in the mail etcetera begin to haunt the group. But it is all entertainment, right? The line between reality and nightmare quickly disappears; the superficiality of ‘friendship’ becomes apparent; pleas for help go unheard.
A potentially powerful statement on the current human condition, didn’t quite translate as such on stage. There were moments where it seemed to be working but alas not enough. The editing was not concise; the narrative did not flow seamlessly from beginning to middle to end. The presentation of the texts was confusing, hard to follow and often repetitive. The piece could have been shortened considerably from its duration of 2h45m.

Fly away far from morbid miasma; will purify you in the upper air, and wood, as pure and divine liquor, clear fire that fills the clear spaces
Baudelaire

Enter into a paracosm inspired by the vivid imagination of a child’s mind. The aim of this performance-choreographed installation is to transport the audience into the mind of a child as it creates a dream-like world with its own standards and living beings with their own language, culture and history. The music was surreal evoking a sense of this world – the choreographed movements strengthened this. Unfortunately the lighting by Alexandre Pilon-Guay was too basic and kind of weakened the effect – lighting special-effects only came from one side – would have been more effective if the whole room would have been enveloped. This would have given the audience the sense of “being there.”
