Summer’s musical rendezvous from June 27th till July 6th 2019

150 indoor concerts (announced April 24) spread over 14 series and presented in 11 venues in and around the Quartier du Spectacles. From intimate showrooms to prestigious concert halls, the FIJM will be host to a vast array of musical names – young artists on the rise, those at their peaks, and finally, legends of jazz. An endless palette of music of all styles and cultures with over 17 countries represented.

Artistes de qui je ai reçus une copie physique (CD ou vinyle) pendant l'année précédente et sont performants pendant le festival de cette année. Un bref commentaire et biographie seront écrits dans cette section.

A)  Rafael & Energia Dominicana, Enamorarse en la Playa (Falling in Love at the Beach)

Rafael (Wilsikin Esteban Medina Arias) is a singer-songwriter, bandleader and producer who was born in the Dominican Republic, and is now based in Montreal. He is the current flag bearer and proponent of Latin Music, especially highlighting the contagious sounds, grooves and rhythms of his homeland – the Dominican Republic. His eclectic repertoire includes meringue, bachata, salsa, rumba and balada. The music certainly lives up to the name of his band Energia Dominicana, which means Dominican Energy. Guaranteed to make you dance.

If your desire is to be in a tropical paradise, but it is not possible to do so, go see his performance with his group of accomplished musicians at 6pm June 28 on the Casino outdoor stage.

Rafael (Wilsikin Esteban Medina Arias) est un auteur-compositeur-interprète, chef d'orchestre et producteur né en République Dominicaine et basé à Montréal.  Il est actuellement le porte-paroles et le défenseur de la musique Latine, soulignant en particulier les sons, les rainures et les rythmes contagieux de son pays, la République Dominicaine.  Son répertoire éclectique comprend le meringue, le bachata, la salsa, la rumba et le balada.  La musique porte certainement le nom de son groupe Energia Dominicana, qui signifie Energie Dominicaine.  Garanti de vous faire danser.

18h00 – Salle Gesù; Vijay Iyer and/et Craig Taborn

Since 2007, this impressive and extraordinary piano duo, have learned to meld and mesh their artistic approaches into one. The first two tracks were quite lengthy (both approximately 40 minutes long). It was around 7:30pm and had to leave for the next concert. They were beginning to play a third track.

Depuis 2007, ce duo de pianos impressionnant et extraordinaire a appris à fusionner leurs approches artistiques. Les deux premières pistes étaient assez longues (environ 40 minutes). Il était environ 19h30 et je devait partir pour le prochain concert. Ils commençaient à jouer une troisième piste.

As you can deduce from above, you can expect an uplifting, enjoyable and memorable performance from this ensemble of iconic, prolific, eclectic and virtuosic musicians. Instrumental compositions by members of the band were the basic order of the day with exhilarating arrangements of works from other composers added in for good measure. Bob Dylan’s Watching the River Flow was the only vocal (sung by Kevin Hayes – outstanding and a highlight of the concert.

Comme vous pouvez le déduire de ci-dessus, vous pouvez vous attendre à une performance exaltante, agréable et mémorable de cet ensemble de musiciens emblématiques, prolifiques, éclectiques et virtuoses. Les compositions instrumentales des membres du groupe étaient à l’ordre du jour, avec des arrangements exaltants d’œuvres d’autres compositeurs qui ont été ajoutées pour faire bonne mesure. Watching the River Flow de Bob Dylan était le seul vocal (chanté par Kevin Hayes) – exceptionnel et un des moments forts du spectacle.

This amazing trio plays a dreamlike ambient music that blends his own compositions with Bach Chorales and traditional or neo-Norwegian folk music.

Ce trio étonnant joue une musique ambiante onirique qui mélange ses propres compositions avec des chorales de Bach et de la musique folk Norvégienne – traditionnelle ou néo.

20h00 – Monument National; Youn Sun Nah (나윤선, South Korea / Corée du Sud)

Truly this is my coup-de cœur of this year’s edition. Her voice is breathtaking and wide-ranging. She produces vocalizations that are beyond words – WOW!!! And you are thinking “How is this possible?” Her performance of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was truly outstanding and a highlight of the concert. Upon its conclusion, she received a fifteen minute standing ovation that brought her to tears (and, I’m certain, some in the audience as well). She was accompanied by two accomplished musicians. Both alternated between two instruments – guitar/keyboards and bass/drums.

Ceci est vraiment mon coup de cœur de l’édition de cette année. Sa voix est à couper le souffle et varié. Elle produit des vocalisations qui dépassent les mots – WOW !!! Et vous vous dites «Comment est-ce possible?». Sa performance de Hallelujah de Leonard Cohen était vraiment exceptionnelle et a été un des moments forts du concert. À sa conclusion, elle a reçu une ovation debout de quinze minutes qui l’a émue aux larmes (et, j'en suis certain, parmi le public également). Elle était accompagnée de deux musiciens accomplis. Les deux alternaient entre deux instruments – guitare/claviers et basse/batterie.

18h00 – L’Astrale; Charles Papassoff – Darkly Bright Conversations with Shakespeare

William Shakespeare’s sonnets live on due to this amazing score composed by Papassoff. The score consists of elements from nearly every major genre – largely progressive jazz-rock with many classical themes. It also effectively captures the essence of the mood of the sonnet. Some were introspective; others expressed disappointment, discontent or anger on the state of humanity. Clearly shows the timelessness of Shakespeare’s inspirational words. Papassoff’s voice is definitely suited for reciting Shakespeare.

Les sonnets de William Shakespeare continuent à vivre grâce à cette partition étonnante composée par Papassoff. La partition contient des éléments de presque tous les genres majeurs – principalement du jazz-rock progressive avec de nombreux thèmes classiques. Il capture également efficacement l'essence de l'ambiance du sonnet. Certains étaient introspectifs; d'autres ont exprimé leur déception, leur mécontentement ou leur colère face à l'état d'humanité. Montre clairement le caractère intemporel des mots inspirants de Shakespeare. La voix de Papassoff convient parfaitement à la récitation de Shakespeare.

20h00 – Monument National; Patricia Barber

In the format of a standard trio (piano, double bass and drums), Barber performs her own compositions along with pop standards from the 50s and 60s. A highlight of the the concert was the final track — a jazzy rendition of Light my Fire by the Doors. Much of the material performed was from the art song cycle, Angels, Birds, and I..., from her latest album Higher.

Dans le format d'un trio standard (piano, contrebasse et batterie), Barber interprète ses propres compositions ainsi que les standards pop des années 50 et 60. Un point fort du concert était la dernière piste — une interprétation jazzy de Light my Fire par les Doors. Une grande partie du matériel interprété provenait du cycle de la chanson d'art, Angels, Birds, and I ... de Higher, son dernier album.

This promising young artist sings standards endowed with a voice that is a cross somewhere between that of Roberto Flack and Sade.

Ce jeune artiste prometteuse chante des standards dotés d'une voix qui se situe entre celle de Roberto Flack et celle de Sade.

George Benson

Multi-award winning guitarist and singer George Benson has been performing professionally since 1960. Many of his records have gone platinum or higher. Backed by six proficient musicians, Benson performs his biggest hits of his career plus many new ones. These often moved the crowd to their feet, turning SWP into a dance hall.

Le guitariste et chanteur maintes fois récompensé, George Benson, a performé professionnellement depuis 1960. Beaucoup de ses disques ont atteint le niveau de platine ou supérieur. Soutenu par six musiciens chevronnés, Benson interprète ses plus grands succès de sa carrière, ainsi que de nombreux pièces nouveaux. Ceux-ci ont souvent soulevé la foule, transformant SWP en salle de danse.

Biréli Langrene

This enjoyable evening of of solo guitar was an unprepared (as admitted by Biréli), and therefore unpredictable, totally improvised jazz that was loaded with moments of humour. His playing was impressive. Overall, a very memorable performance.

Cette agréable soirée de guitare solo était un jazz totalement improvisé (selon ce que reconnaît Biréli) et donc imprévisible, chargé d’histoires d’humour. Son performance était impressionnant. Dans l'ensemble, une performance très mémorable.

B)     Trio John Pizzarelli Trio -  For Centennial Reasons: 100 years Salute to Nat King Cole (1919-1965)

An evening exploring the musical world of Nat King Cole filled with humorous anecdotes, quirky song lyrics and fascinating stories of how certain songs came to be included in Nat King Cole’s repertoire. Though NKC passed away at a very young age, he left an extensive legacy. In many respects, he was a pioneer.

Une soirée explorant le monde musical de Nat King Cole, riche en anecdotes humoristiques, en paroles étranges et en histoires fascinantes sur la manière dont certaines chansons ont été intégrées au répertoire de Nat King Cole. Bien que NKC soit décédé très jeune, il a laissé un héritage considérable. À bien des égards, il était un pionnier.

Pianist Rafael Zaldivar brilliantly and precisely played various pieces inspired from Afro-Cuban sounds. Accompanied by anywhere from zero to four artists, Zaldivar invoked the spirits of his Afro-Cuban ancestry.

Le pianiste Rafael Zaldivar a joué avec brio et précision diverses pièces inspirées de sons Afro-Cubains. Accompagné de zéro à quatre artistes, Zaldivar a invoqué les esprits de ses origines Afro-Cubaines.

Justin Wright

This beautiful ambient music mixes classical elements with electronic sounds. The performance consisted of three different soundscapes, each producing a unique impression. Cellist Justin Wright was accompanied by a violinist and a keyboardist / electronics.

Cette belle musique ambiante mélange des éléments classiques avec des sons électroniques. La performance consistait en trois paysages sonores différents, chacun produisant une impression unique. Le violoncelliste Justin Wright était accompagné d'un violoniste et d'un claviériste/électronique.

Inscape is a shortened form for INNER SCAPE. This show was sold out.

Emilie Khan

Harpist Emilie Khan plays an original style of dream-pop that is endowed with what I consider to be the instrument that produces the most beautiful sound. Her voice was very lovely to hear and mainly in the upper range.

My biggest beef was the audience. Many were walking in throughout the performance. Others talked incessantly, including the couple behind me and two women who stood in the aisle until the break. Come on people — doesn’t the opening artist deserve as much respect as the headliner? If you don’t want to hear the first part, please remain in the lobby until the break. It would be greatly appreciated.

L’harpiste Emilie Khan joue un style original de pop-rêve dotée de ce que je considère être l'instrument qui produit le son le plus beau. Sa voix était très agréable à entendre et principalement dans les hauteurs.
Mon plus gros bœuf était le public. Beaucoup ont rentré tout au long du spectacle. D'autres ont parlé sans cesse, y compris le couple derrière moi et deux femmes qui se sommes tenues dans l'allée jusqu'à la pause. Allez les gens — l’artiste qui ouvre ne mérite-t-il pas autant de respect que la vedette? Si vous ne voulez pas entendre la première partie, restez dans lobby jusqu’à la pause. Ce serait vivement apprécié.

Bahamas

Bahamas (a.k.a Afie Jumaven) takes us back to the glory days of classic country rock, when bands like Credence Clearwater Revival, Alabama, Area Code 615 and Marshall Tucker Band ruled the air waves. Memorable!

Wray Downes was awarded the Oscar Peterson Prize. This is a great honour for him as Oscar Peterson was his mentor.

The set list included three compositions by Oscar Peterson; one by Wray in honour of his grandson, one by Chad Mitchell and others. The music was bebop with lots of swing. It wasn’t long before my head, feet and hands started boppin. Nearly 90 and still going strong.

La liste comprenait trois compositions d'Oscar Peterson; une de Wray en l'honneur de son petit-fils, une de Chad Mitchell et d'autres. La musique était bebop avec beaucoup de swing. Ce ne fut pas long avant que ma tête, mes pieds et mes mains ne commencent à bouger. Près de 90 ans et toujours aussi fort.

Trio Holman Trio, Chile / Chili

An impressive performance, Holman plays a progressive jazz-rock that is in stark contrast with headliner Yamandu Costa.

Une performance impressionnante, Holman joue un jazz-rock progressif qui contraste avec la vedette Yamandu Costa.

Trio Yamandu Costa Trio, Brazil / Brésil

Accompanied by Guto Wirtti on bass and Richard Scofano on bandoneón, Yamandu Costa performs with extreme virtuosity traditional Latin-American music.

Accompagné de Guto Wirtti à la basse et de Richard Scofano au bandonéon, Yamandu Costa joue avec une virtuosité extrême la musique Latino-Américaine traditionnelle.
