Marc Palestro (Jean Dujardin) grew up in Oran, Algeria, just before Algeria’s independence. Today he is married to Clothilde (Sandrine Kiberlain) and father of 11-year-old daughter, Emmanuelle (Pauline Bélier). He is a successful real-estate agent working in his father-in-law’s, Robert Prat (Michel Aumont), company in Aix-en-Provence.
One day Marc is showing to a woman, who goes by the name of Mrs Mondonato (Marie-Josée Croze) a traditional country house. He is spellbound as she seems vaguely familiar to him. She was one of the two girls he grew up with in Oran. He was in love with Cathy. The other girl was Marie-Jeanne. He traces her back to her hotel and they spend the night together. When he tells his mother that he has seen Cathy, she tells him that she perished along with her father in a bombing just after they left and before France granted Algeria its independence. This throws Marc into further disarray. If this woman is not Cathy, then who is she and what is her real purpose vis-à-vis this property?Jean Dujardin is superb in an unusually (in my mind – I have only seen him in comedies) serious role. The suspense is atmospheric and the twists and turns in the plot are sufficient to keep the ‘mystery’ and ‘engagement’ alive.
